Bell Work 9/9/14 Solve the equation. 1. x 5 12 2. x6 4 3. x 5 4 4. x 3 8 5. x 7 3 6. x 5 7 7. 9 x 3 8. 7 x2 9. 4 7 x Yesterday’s Homework 1. Any questions? 2. Please pass your homework to the front. • Make sure the correct heading is on your paper. • Is your NAME on your paper? • Make sure the homework is 100% complete. • Incomplete work will NOT be accepted. Heading 5/6/2017 Solving One-Step Equations 2.1B (multiply + divide) TSWBAT: solve one-step equations using multiplication and division. Students solve multi-step problems, including word problems, involving linear equations and linear inequalities in one variable and provide justification for each step. Notes • Solving Equations • Goal: to get the variable by itself on one side of the equation. This is known as isolating the variable. • This is also called solving (to solve) an equation. • When we solve an equation, we find the value that makes the equation TRUE, called the solution. Notes • Steps for Solving Linear Equations 1. Simplify both sides of the equation. • Distribute and/or combine like terms. 2. Collect the variables to one side of the equation. • Collect to the side with the greater variable. 3. Use inverse operations to isolate the variable. • PEMDAS backwards. • The Golden Rule (of Mathematics) What you do to one side, you must do to the other. Notes Solve the equation. Ex. Ex. 4x 20 4 2x 16 2 4 x 5 Ex. 42 7x 2 7 7 6 x x 8 Now you try. Ex. 5x 35 5 5 x 7 Ex. 80 8x 8 8 10 x Ex. 9x 63 9 9 x7 Notes Solve the equation. You can reduce this. Notes • Reciprocal = Two numbers are reciprocals if their product is 1. a b = If is a nonzero number, than its reciprocal is . b a Find the reciprocal. Ex. 3 4 Ex. If its multiplication or _______ divide by the same number and vice multiplication, ______ versa. Sometimes you have to multiply by the reciprocal if there are fractions. _________ Ticket Out the Door Complete the Ticket Out the Door without talking!!!!! Talking = time after the bell! Put your NAME on the paper. When finished, turn your paper face DOWN. Solve the equation. 2 x 10 3 Today’s Homework Rules for Homework 1. Pencil ONLY. 2. Must show all of your work. • NO WORK = NO CREDIT 3. Must attempt EVERY problem. 4. Always check your answers.
