What is Biomedical Engineering?
• A biomedical engineer uses traditional
engineering expertise to analyze and solve
problems in biology and medicine,
providing an overall enhancement of
health care.
UW’s History
• Research dates as far back as the late
1950's. Professors were a part of other
departments
• Department
established in
1999
BME Applications
• Bioinstrumentation
• Biomaterials
• Biomechanics
Applications, cont’d.
• Cellular, Tissue, and Genetic Engineering
• Clinical Engineering
• Medical Imaging
– CT, X-Ray
– MRI
– PET
• Orthopedic
Bioengineering
Applications, cont’d.
• Rehabilitation Engineering
– RERC on AMI works to give everyone access
to healthcare services and therapies
• Systems Physiology
• Ergonomics
• Patent Law
After Graduation
• Industry (~50%)
– Work for a company in academic focus
• Medical School (~25%)
– High acceptance rate compared to other majors
• Graduate School (~25%)
– To continue research
– Advanced degree leading to academic career
How do I get there?:
The Academics
