THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Respiratory System
exchanges gases
between the body
and the
environment.
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Air passes through the
nose and mouth,
pharynx, trachea,
bronchi, and lungs.
The parts of the
respiratory system
work together and
supply the body with
oxygen.
PHARYNX AND TRACHEA
Inhale – when oxygen
enters the body
(breathe in)
Exhale – Carbon
dioxide leaves the
body
PHARYNX
When we inhale, air
enters the nostrils
and passes through
the pharynx.
The pharynx is part
of both the
digestive and
respiratory systems.
PHARNYX
Digestive
Respiratory
Food passes through
the pharynx to the
esophagus
Air travels through
the pharynx to the
trachea
TRACHEA
Trachea is also
called the windpipe
because it is long,
tube-like organ that
connects the
pharynx to the
bronchi.
BRONCHI
There are two
bronchi (one left and
one right)
Bronchi divide into
smaller tubes that
end in tiny groups
of cells called
alveoli
ALVEOLI
Inside each lung, there are
more than 100 million alveoli.
The alveoli are surrounded by
blood vessels called
capillaries.
Transition between the
respiratory system and
circulatory system occurs
when oxygen transfers from
alveoli to capillaries.
