Period 7 Cell Yearbook • • • • • • • • Cell Wall Found around the cell membrane of a cell Gives rigidity and strength Protects from mechanical stress Permit multicellular organisms to build and hold their shape Limits entry of large molecules which may be toxic to the cell Helps to retain water Only found in plant cells A cell only has one cell wall You can find microtubules in the cytoplasm, cilia, and flagella. Microtubules are important for maintaining cell structure, and for providing transportation throughout the cell. Microtubules are found in all eukaryotic cells which include plant and animal cells. Depending on the type of cell, the amount of microtubules vary. Scientists have discovered that there are ~700 microtubules in a BSC-1 cells. Extracurricular activities o Chloroplasts are only found in plant cells o They perform photosynthesis capture light energy from a light source and produce energy in the form of ATP. Siblings o A unicellular plant cell may have one large chloroplast, whereas a leaf-plant cell may have 20-30 cells. Favorite Hang-Out: You can find me in the Cytoplasm near the Mitochondrion Hobbies: I serve as a digestion compartment for cellular materials that have exceeded their lifetime or no longer are useful. I also break down cellular waste products, fats, carbs, and proteins into simple compounds. Extracurricular Activites: I can be found in both animal and plant cells but rarely in plant cells Siblings: There are no definite number of us, it varies from cell to cell depending on the cell type and the circumstances. Darshana Chander pd.5 microfilament Favorite hang-out spot: I am almost everywhere I am mostly located in muscle Extracurricular activities: cells I am located in most cells Hobbies: I help cells move by pushing and pulling on the binding proteins Siblings: I have many siblings there are usually hundreds of us maybe even thousands! Nucleolus • Favorite Hang-out Spot: The Nucleus is pretty chill • Hobbies: I LOVEEE Producing ribosomes; and directing the assembly of proteins in the nucleus • Extracurriculars: I’m found in all plant and animal cells. I’m a busy bee. • Siblings: I’m an only child! It gets lonely sometimes… Nucleolus Jenna Erdogan-Nicosia Period 5 • • • • Flagella Favorite hang out spot: outside the cell body, on one end (whip-like projection) Hobbies: Movement (through water) and a sense organ: detects changes in external chemicals and temperatures Found in protist cells, bacteria, and eukaryotic sperm cells (many animals, plants, and even ferns) Siblings: Usually singular, although there are some cells that have two or three flagella Sarmishta Govindhan Mitochondria-Gunti Favorite Hang Out Spot: cytoplasm in the Animal cell, and the same in the plant cell just that it surrounds the central vacuole, the nucleus and the other parts of the cell. Siblings: depends on the cell and its job. Extracurricular Activities: Found in most eukaryotic cells , all animal cells, all plant cells Hobbies: It's main function is to produce ATP. Also called the power house of the cell. Breaks down sugar. Murali Gunti Period:5 Favorite Hang-Out Spot: In animal cells I stay toward the outer part inside the cell and in a plant cell I stay more towards the middle I am not an outsider, totally an insider organelle. Hobbies: Temporarily stores water and other nutrients I guess you could say its hard for me to stay committed. Extracurricular Activities: Found in all plant and animal cells, I have so much to do on the weekends, but I can pencil you in between loads. Siblings: In plant cells I am an only child and in animal cells I have siblings and it is dysfunctional family. Christina Hayduchok 5 The Nucleus Favorite Hang-Out Spot: in the middle of a cell Hobbies: stores DNA and genetic information. Creates a long fiber called Chromatin by combining long strands of DNA with special proteins, which is used to make Chromosomes. Extracurricular Activities: all animal cells, plant cells and eukaryotic cells Siblings: Only Child Sruthi Jana Pr.5 Chromosome Jones Favorite Hang-Out Spot: The chromosome is located in the nucleus of the cell. Hobbies: The chromosome is either a threadlike linear strand or a circular strand of DNA in bacteria that contains the hereditary information necessary for cell life. Extracurricular Activities: There are chromosomes in every type of cell (plant and animal) Siblings: Most body cells contain 46 chromosomes in 23 pairs. Abbey Jones Period 5 Ribosome Favorite Hang-out spot: Ribosomes can be found in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. They are also found within the cell Hobbies: Ribosomes are responsible for assembling the proteins of the cell. Extracurricular Activities: Ribosomes are found in all types of cells. Siblings: There are approximately 15,000 ribosome in a single cell. Although their no. varies from cell to cell and found maximum in embryonic cells Angelo Lopez Pd.5 • • • • Favorite Hang Out Spot: Me and the Girlies love the Outer Layer of Cell, its where the cool kids hang. Hobbies: Small particles (< ~40kDa) are able to pass through my complex by passive diffusion. Extracurricular Activities: I am found in all vertebrate cells, meaning I am found in all animal cells. Siblings: I have a lot of siblings! There are about on average 2000 nuclear pore complexes in the nuclear envelope of a vertebrate cell, but it varies depending on cell type and the stage in the life cycle. Nadia Nidam, 5 Nuclear Pore- Nidam Cytoplasm Hang out Spot- The cytoplasm is found inside the cell membrane, surrounding the nuclear envelope and the cytoplasmic organelles. Basically the substance that fills the entire cell. Hobbies- its job is to store nutrition and important chemicals for the cell. Extracurricular Activities- Can be in an animal cell or a plant cell. Siblings- Only one... Cytoplasm is a liquid, there is only one, but as water comes into the cell (through osmosis) more of it can be made Karmen Rodas P.5 Golgi Body - SantaMaria Hobbies: Packages proteins and transports them elsewhere in the cell. Favorite hang-out spot: Inside the cell more towards the middle. Extracurricular activities: Found in every type of cell!
