Thoracic Body- heart shaped and in mid. Thoracic region. Two costal demi-facets (one above and one near the root of pedicle) are covered with cartilage. Pedicles- directed back and slightly up; Deeper than in any other region of the vertebral column. Lamina- Overlap subjacent vertebrae (tile’s on roof) Vertebral Foramen- small circular form Spinous process- long triangle-shaped on coronal section Superior Articular Process- thin plate’s of bone projecting out from lamina and pedicles. Facets are directed back and lateral. Inferior Articular Process- slightly project from lamina. Facets are directed down, forward and a little medial. Transverse Process- (1st, 9th. 10th, 11th& 12th vertebrae) long, thick and strong, directed back and lateral. Each end has club like extremity. Concave surface for articulation with the tubercle of a rib located on the front. First Thoracic Vertebrae- has entire articular facet for the head of the rib and a demifacet for the head of a second rib. Ninth Thoracic Vertebrae- has entire articular facet on either side which is lay’s partly on the pedicle. Eleventh Thoracic Vertebrae- gets in the proper size and shape of the lumbar vertebrae. Large articular facets lay on the pedicle (the pedicle is the strongest in this and the next vertebrae than in any other thoracic region. Twelfth Thoracic Vertebrae- Distinguished by its inferior articular surface which is similar to the lumbar vertebrae- convex and directed down. Superior and Inferior Transverse process correspond to the mammillary and accessory processes for the tenth and eleventh vertebrae.
