Back to Basics: OSHA Fit Testing for Particulate Respirators
POST TEST ANSWER KEY:
1. True. Certified respirators must be worn to protect you from inhaling infectious
airborne particles.
2. B. When entering a room under Droplet Precautions. Droplet Precautions requires
the use of a surgical mask, not a respirator.
3. False. Patients do not need to wear a respirator, and in fact need only wear a surgical
mask if leaving the isolation room. Healthcare workers outside of the isolation room do
not need to wear a respirator.
4. C. Is required every 6 months. Fit testing is required at least once a year after the
initial fit test per OSHA. However, the frequency may be determined by various factors.
5. D. All of the above.
6. True.
7. D. All of the above. You should also know what to do should there be problems with
the respirator during use.
8. False. You must perform a user/seal check each and every time you enter a
contaminated area to make sure the respirator is effective. If you cannot achieve a proper
seal, do not enter the area.
9. B. It should be removed outside the patient room, after the door is closed. A is
incorrect as respirators should never be removed while in the patient room, as that is
where you need the protection. C is incorrect as you should never grasp the respirator
from the front, which may be contaminated. Rather, remove by grasping the elastic
bands. D is incorrect as you should always remove PPE beginning with the most
contaminated, which will be the gloves.
10. A. Report your symptoms to your supervisor. B and C are incorrect as you should
never remove your respirator for any reason in the airborne infection isolation room.
