Eminence Brass was formed by four of today’s leading brass musicians:
David Childs was born in the Yorkshire village of Grimethorpe in 1981. He played his first notes at the
age of three and today is widely regarded as one of the finest euphonium soloists in the world. He has
given recitals in some of the United Kingdom’s most prestigious venues and regularly gives solo
performances with various ensembles throughout Europe, Asia, America, and Australia.
David has appeared as a soloist with many of the UK’s finest orchestras including the BBC Philharmonic,
Royal Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Concert Orchestra, and RTE Concert
Orchestra. However, he still gets a great deal of satisfaction from performing with the British style brass
band, a genre very close to his heart, and is currently Principal Euphonium with the Flowers Band.
As an Ambassador for Besson Musical Instruments David is in demand as a soloist and educator at home
and abroad. Having made appearances at the BBC Proms, Cheltenham Festival and Harrogate
International Festival, David is looking forward to giving the world premiere of Johan De Meij’s Concerto
for Euphonium & Orchestra at the Last Night of the Welsh Proms 2015.
Ian Culross was born in 1986 in Dundee, Scotland into a large musical family, so making music was all
that he wanted to do from an early age. He first began to learn the trumpet in school aged seven, before
joining his local brass band Dundee Instrumental on cornet at the age of ten. Iain went on to play
principal cornet with several of Scotland’s top bands, also including the National Youth Brass Band of
Scotland. Many solo competitions were won along the way - including the junior section at the British
Open Solo Championships at age eleven. Having gained two Trinity College diplomas before the age of
eighteen, Iain took the advice of teacher David James and moved south to study music at the University
of Salford, where his playing really began to blossom.
In 2009 Iain was the recipient of a prestigious Dewar Arts award, awarded for performance in trumpet.
This award allowed him to complete his postgraduate studies at Salford, graduating with an MA in Music
(performance) in 2010. Iain has held the position of principal cornet with many of the UK’s leading brass
bands including Sellers International, YBS, Carlton Main, The Fairey Band, and The Leyland Band. He has
enjoyed many successful contest and concert performances, and has established a reputation as one of
the finest cornet soloists of his generation, touring as a soloist and teacher as far afield as the USA,
Norway, Switzerland, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Japan. In 2012 Iain released his debut solo CD
"Vanguard" which was met with great critical acclaim, being nominated for solo CD of the year by both
the British Bandsman and 4barsrest.com. Iain joined the Grimethorpe Colliery Band on principal cornet
in December 2013 and became a Performing Artist for Besson Musical Instruments in 2014.
Owen Farr began his involvement with brass music in Wales at the age of six when he joined the
Pontypool Brass Band. Having played with the Tredegar Town Band, the Williams’ Fairey Band, and the
principality’s leading brass band Cory, Owen now travels the world as a soloist and pedagogue.
Owen teaches at the Royal Welsh College of Music, Birmingham Conservatoire, Royal Northern College
of Music and is dedicated to improving teaching methods for the instrument he loves. Recognised as the
United Kingdom’s leading tenor horn clinician, Owen is a Performing Artist for Besson Musical
Instruments.
Owen has a busy schedule as both soloist and chamber musician. His performances have taken him
throughout Europe and have been heard on S4C television, BBC Radio 2’s Listen to the Band and the
world’s longest-running live music radio programme, Friday Night is Music Night. Owen is constantly
raising awareness for the tenor horn; lyrical tone quality and stunning technical precision have become his
trade mark.
Richard Marshall is widely regarded as the finest cornet players of his generation. He began playing the
cornet at the age of nine and in 1996, at the age of nineteen Richard became Principal Cornet of the
Grimethorpe Colliery Band, a position he held for 10 years. During his time at Grimethorpe Richard
gained a BA (Hons) in Band Studies and an LRSM in Bandmastership.
As a soloist Richard has released three CDs, all of which have been received with critical acclaim. As a
regular tutor with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, Yorkshire Youth Brass Band and the
International Brass Band Summer School, Richard is a respected educator. He is also a cornet tutor at
the Royal Northern College of Music and Birmingham Conservatoire and a Besson Performing Artist and
Consultant.
Richard is currently Principal Cornet of the world famous Black Dyke Band, a position known as the
‘hottest seat in banding’!
