Most New Zealanders will have some experience of it – either personally or through a relative or friend. More people are developing cancer – mainly because the population is growing and getting older. Many cancers can be cured if they’re found and treated in time. It is estimated that in New Zealand, about 1 person in 3 who gets cancer is cured. Even if the cancer cannot be cured, more effective treatment means many people are now living longer. Studies have shown that we are dying of cancer at a much higher rate than our trans-Tasman neighbours. Research by the University of Auckland, published March 2016 PLOS One, showed the chance of surviving cancer in Australia had improved by 6% for men and 3% for women. In New Zealand, the improvement was less than 2% for both women and men. The researchers estimated that 12% of New Zealand deaths from cancer within five years of diagnosis would be avoided if this country’s survival rate was the same as Australia’s. There is a general consensus that early diagnosis, better screening and healthier lifestyles are all major contributors in the fight against cancer. Every service we provide is completely free of charge. The Cancer Society requires $3.34m to operate each year. We receive no direct Government Funding so we rely on funds raised by our community. We need to expand the services we provide because of an increase in demand for them. We see that demand every day. Help us write the future… 3 WHO you would be helping and how In 2015, 600 people attended programmes run by Cancer Society Wellington, including 500 counselling sessions. And our 0800 CANCER Helpline received 3,000 calls. Our supportive care team needs to expand to: • hire more people for our support and information nursing team so we can set up a new cancer information nurse drop-in service in Lower Hutt and Porirua. • provide more accommodation for people and their supporters staying near the hospital during treatment • drive more people to and from treatment through our transport service (remove that stress from working family members). In the Wairarapa alone, we helped people get to treatment by doing, around, 600 drives in 2015 but, ideally, we could expand this. • give more Patient Support Grants. We could offer more one-off financial assistance (on assessment by an oncology social worker or cancer nurse) to people with cancer and their families. • reach more people through talks, forums, groups and programmes for people affected by cancer and those interested in cancer-related topics. • give more counselling sessions for people in distress, or help people adjust to life during and after treatment (beyond what we currently provide in Wellington and Kāpiti). • set up a dedicated cancer survivorship service to provide nurse-led post-treatment clinics and help others move forward beyond treatment. • Continue to invest in even more people knowing about the 0800 Cancer Helpline. But, no matter how much we spend on essential services, the amount of cancer in our communities continues to rise. That’s why we provide health promotion programmes that focus on making healthy choices, the easy choices. We educate health professionals and other targeted groups about cancer and our services. Our health promotion teams needs to continue its vital educational role in our community. More funding would help us reach more people that need help: • We could work in more Wellington communities where our support is really needed. • We’d increase our support for low decile schools in the Wellington region so they could provide safer sun smart school grounds and better health in the future for their students. • Increase our workplace wellness programmes, focussing on Sunsmart, Smokefree, Men’s Health and promoting the Cancer Society’s services and key messages. • Together, we could fund evaluation programmes to ensure we are achieving our goals, and to enable us to better report outcomes to our funders. Research In the last 12 months, the Cancer Society federation gave over $5m in funding research in New Zealand. The higher this amount gets, the greater the dividends downstream. Research would be a priority, no question. 74% of a donated dollar is spent on services. The Cancer Society is the biggest charity provider of cancer services in New Zealand. 4 Cancer Society of New Zealand Te Kāhui Matepukupuku o Aotearoa WHO we are The Team The team at the Cancer Society Wellington (including regional centres in Kāpiti, Wairarapa, Marlborough and Nelson) is made up of nurses, counsellors and educators who work with the utmost professional skill to assist those in our community who need our help.
