PLATE MOVEMENTS
CHAPTER 10-2 PAGE 324
OBJECTIVES
• Students should be able to:
• Describe the formation of island arcs
• Describe the formation of island chains
• Compare the formation of island arcs and island chains
RESOURCES
Overview of crust movements
Island arc and Island chains – Quizlet
Plate Tectonics – Kahoot – (sad volcano)
Volcanic island arcs are found where oceanic
plate boundaries collide and are formed at
right angles to the line of convergence. They
are usually associated with the formation of
ocean trenches. Egs Japanese Archipelago,
Solomon Islands (archipelago), Kuril Islands,
and the Aleutian archipelago.
HOTSPOT ISLAND CHAINS
• Hotspot Island chains are formed by the tectonic plate moving over
and underlying weakness in the mantle – they can be located at any
point on a tectonic plate (but less likely on the boundaries).
• A chain of islands forms in the direction that the plate is travelling eg
the Hawaiian island chain. Azores, Iceland, Reunion.
• Another Hotspot animation
• Form at plate boundaries
• Subduction zone
• From at right angles to the
direction of the plate movement
