Exploring the Americas:
In the 1300’s, the Reniassance, a period of great creativity, changed the way Europeans thought
about the world and paved the way for an age of exploration. Powerful nations set out to find new trade
routes to Asia and to acquire wealth. Scientific instruments like the astrolabe and the magnetic compass
and new ship designs made long ocean voyages possible. As more explorations took place, mapmakers
produced more accurate maps.
Between A.D. 300 and 1600, Ghana, Mali, and the Songhai Empire flourished in Africa south of
the Sahara. Portugal grew rich from trade in gold, ivory, and slaves on West Africa’s Gold Coast.
Portugal’s Vasco da Gama reached Asia by sailing east around Africa’s southern tip. Christopher
Columbus, sailing for Spain, thought he could find a sea route to Asia by sailing west across the
Atlantic Ocean. In 1492, he landed in the Americas. In 1519 Ferdinand Magellan’s crew began a
journey in which they would circumnavigate the world.
Spanish Conquistadors, whose goals included spreading religion (GOD), finding GOLD, and
achieving Greatness for the home country (GLORY), conquered Native American civilizations and
built an American empire. Aided by horses and guns, the Spanish defeated Aztec and Inca Empires,
which also lost many people to European diseases for which the Native Americans had no immunity.
Spain used Native Americans and later African Americans as enslaved labor in mines and on
plantations. Trade in goods and ideas between Europe and America, known as the Columbian
Exchange, altered life on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
France, England, and the Netherlands also founded colonies in North America. Each country
search for a Northwest Passage to Asia—a water route through the Americas. Religious conflicts
between Catholic and Protestant countries and trade rivalries spilled over to the colonies. French and
Dutch explorers were more interested in setting up profitable trading ports in establishing permanent
settlements.
