Air Pressure in the Earth’s Atmosphere
1. Draw a diagram that represents the makeup of the atmosphere. In each layer list
the following: density of air molecules, air pressure, temperature, and what type of
objects would I find.
Layer
Density
Air Pressure Temperature Objects
Troposphere Most dense Most air pressure0- -60 C
Stratosphere Less dense Less air press Warm ozone
Mesosphere Less dense Less air press -90 C cold
Thermosphere Least dense Least air press 1800C hot
Planes, clouds
Ozone,wea.balloon
meteoroids
Northern lights
2. Explain what the ozone layer is and which layer of the atmosphere would I find it.
The ozone layer is made up of 3 oxygen atoms and protects us from UV rays from
the sun. It is found in the stratosphere layer of the atmosphere.
3. Define the following:
A. Strato-_layered/flatten______
B. Tropo- changing__________
C. Therm- heat________
4. Define the following terms:
A. mesosphere- It is the 3rd layer, middle layer, of the lower atmosphere and is
the coldest layer reaching
-90 C.
B. Ionosphere- It is the 1st sub-layer in the highest layer of the atmosphere,
thermosphere, where the Aurora Borealis, northern lights, is seen.
C. Nitrogen- It is the most common gas in the atmosphere, .78.
D. Oxygen- It makes up .21 of the earth’s atmosphere.
E. Ozone- a gas made up of 3 oxygen molecules bonded together that occurs
naturally in the upper stratosphere and protects us from UV rays.
F. Radiation- Is the 1st form of energy that we receive from the sun.
G. Smog- A type of pollution.
H. Water Vapor- It makes up from zero to .004 of the atmosphere.
5. Explain the importance of protecting our earth from smog, high carbon dioxide
levels, and acid rain. Describe how we can change from a fossil fuel economy to a
hydrogen economy. The importance of protecting our earth from smog, high carbon
dioxide, and acid rain is to keep our earth vital by decreasing the amount of carbon
dioxide and sulfur by not depending on fossil fuels. We can change the amount of
greenhouse gases by changing to a hydrogen economy by using hydrogen from
water as a means of fuel for our transportation and electricity.
6. Draw and label a pie graph that depicts the composition of the atmosphere.
.78- Nitrogen
.21- oxygen
less than .01 carbon dioxide
less than .01 Water Vapor/ other gases
7. Draw and label a mercury barometer. Answer in notes
