What is GÉANT2?
Connect. Communicate. Collaborate
A European R&E Networking Model:
• 7th generation of pan-European research network infrastructure –
continuation of a success story
• Project partners include 30 of Europe’s national research and
education networks (NRENs), DANTE (coordinator) and TERENA
• Connects 34 European countries and serves over 3500 research and
education establishments across Europe
• Over 30 million users
• Provides extensive international connectivity to other world regions
• Funded jointly by NRENs and the European Commission
• Project timescale September 2004 - August 2008

IP Peering
IPv6
Multicast (v4/v6)
Premium IP
Layer 2 VPN
GÉANT Lambda Service
– STM-64 and 10GE lambdas
– Same price regardless of source or destination (on the dark fibre
foot-print)

GÉANT2 Services - II
Connect. Communicate. Collaborate
• GÉANT PLUS – p2p Circuit Service
–
–
–
–
cost-effective support for high-capacity [“lightpath”] services
up to 10G (for now)
emphasis placed on support for Ethernet framing
translational P2P service support
• e.g. native gigE to GFP VC-4-7v over SDH
– develop rapid provisioning → BoD (JRA3/AutoBAHN)

Management
Network Service Provisioning
Dissemination and outreach
Network Operation and Support
User support (NRENs)

Access to GÉANT2
Connect. Communicate. Collaborate
• The GÉANT2 backbone is not the whole story…
• Remember that the GÉANT2 extended community is
comprised of the GÉANT2 backbone PLUS 30 NRENs
• Often an NREN may be behind an autonomous regional
R&E network (from the user’s point of view)
Key point is that services are provided in a federated
multi-domain, multi-technology environment!

40G & 100G in GÉANT2
Connect. Communicate. Collaborate
• 10 Gb/s IP trunk links are starting to fill, need 40 Gbps option
• A-L already has phase shaped binary transmission (PSBT)
modulation for 400-600 km lengths. Good dispersion tolerance with
narrow spectral width allowing use of existing 50 GHz grid
• But GÉANT2 has long PoP-PoP links (~800km, up to ~2000km)
• Differential phase shift keying (DPSK) suitable for spans up to
1000km but requires 100 GHz channel spacing
• Trial of 40 Gb/s with DPSK modulation planned (likely for Geneva –
Frankfurt) just as soon as we can get our hands on it!
• 100G experiments (JRA4, optical researchers, “DIY”)
22
.. towards GÉANT3
Connect. Communicate. Collaborate
• GÉANT2 finishes 30th June 2009 – extended from 31st
August 2008
• GÉANT3 will start June/July 2009 and lasts four years
• GÉANT3 proposal submission 11th September 2008
– evaluation – refining – negotiation with the EC
23
GÉANT3 Vision & Mission
Connect. Communicate. Collaborate
GÉANT3 creates an innovative multi-domain
hybrid networking infrastructure enabling R&E
end-users through their organizations with
flexible and scalable production quality services
via constituent NRENs.
24
GÉANT3 guiding principles
Connect. Communicate. Collaborate
• Coordinated end-user services
– Eduroam, eduGAIN
• Hybrid optical backbone planning & operations
• Multi-domain management
– Common network information exporting schemas and
Information flow
– Control and management planes across domains
25
GÉANT3 guiding principles
Connect. Communicate. Collaborate
• R&E catalyst
– creating a Pan-European human network for innovation and early
service adoption
• Advancing towards the network of the future
– Combining networking for research with research for networking
• e-Society catalyst
– help bridging digital divides
– boost dark fibre provisions throughout Europe
– contribute to the creation of liberalized connectivity markets within
its realm
– encourage vast adoption of advanced e-Services to Schools and
Universities

Summary
Connect. Communicate. Collaborate
• GÉANT2 is a hybrid network connecting 30 NRENs
• Circuit services highly successful but cumbersome to
manage end to end
• Building on the success of the research activities in
GÉANT2, new services are planned for GÉANT3
• Focus on end to end management of services accros the
GÉANT3 service area
