Safe Work Procedure (SWP)
EVD Blood and Body Fluid Post Exposure Protocol
This document is based on the Infection Prevention & Control Management of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD)
Operational Directive in conjunction with WRHA OESH
THIS IS A SPECIFIC EVD POST EXPOSURE PROTOCOL - STAFF DO NOT GO TO EMERGENCY
DEPARTMENT FOR TREATMENT - FOLLOW PROTOCOL BELOW
Position/Job: All staff involved in caring for patients under investigation, as well as probable and
confirmed cases of EVD or working in these areas.
Potential Hazards: Exposure to EVD via blood/body fluids either percutaneous or mucu-cutaneous (i.e.
mucous membranes of the eyes, nose or mouth).
Training and Proficiency: All staff must be trained in this safe work procedure prior to assignment of
caring for patients under investigation, as well as probable and confirmed cases of EVD. Training must
be documented. Supervisors must ensure that workers are trained and follow this safe work procedure.
Steps to be taken in the event of……
a percutaneous or muco-cutaneous (i.e., mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, or mouth) exposure to
infectious material (blood, body fluids, secretions, or excretions) from a patient under investigation for
EVD, or a patient with probable or confirmed EVD occurs.
This safe work procedure must be made specific to the environment/facility, for example: the
location of where first aid (wash/flush) takes place is dependent upon the location of equipment
and cannot be performed in a contaminated area. The site OHN has the WORD document.
1
Immediately and safely stop any current tasks, leave the patient care area.
2
3
Remove all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as per the Removing PPE guidelines. Note:
This must be done carefully because exposure during PPE removal can be just as dangerous
for nosocomial transmission of EVD.
 If percutaneous, wash the affected skin surfaces of the percutaneous injury site with soap
and water immediately after leaving the patient care area and removing PPE.
 If mucu-cutaneous (i.e. mucous membranes of the eyes, nose or mouth) irrigate mucous
membranes (e.g., conjunctiva) with copious amounts of water or an eyewash solution.
4
Immediately report to Manager/Supervisor who will ensure the Source Risk Assessment and
Source Testing are completed as per the Blood and Body Fluid Post Exposure Protocol.
5
Immediately report the incident to OESH by calling (204) 232-9075. This is a time-sensitive task
and must be performed as soon as the healthcare worker leaves the patient care unit. Note: the
incubation period begins two days following the exposure. Exposed persons will be medically
evaluated by OESH including for other potential exposures (e.g., HIV, HCV) and receive followup care.
OESH will consult with the Infectious Diseases (ID) specialist. Dependent upon the severity of
the exposure, the ID Specialist will recommend one or a combination of the following: self
monitoring, direct active monitoring, or restriction of activities/self isolation.
Responsibilities
6
Managers/Supervisors: ensure all duties are performed in accordance to training, established health and safety
and IP&C regulations/guidelines, policies and procedures (e.g. following safe work procedures)
Staff performing task: perform task in accordance to training, established health and safety and IP&C
regulations/guidelines, policies and procedures (e.g. following safe work procedures). Notify Manager or designates
(i.e. supervisors) of all occurrences, injuries illnesses or safety and health concerns which are likely to harm
themselves, co-workers, or any others who enter the premises.
Completion and Review
This safe work procedure will be reviewed any time the task, equipment or materials change and at a
minimum of every three years from the last revision date
