BIOLOGICAL PHYSICS
Foundations of physics for the health sciences, including mechanics, properties of fluids
and solids, thermodynamics and DC circuits, and radiation and health.
This course is intended for students who have passed their laboratory component in the
2016 first semester PHSI 191 course but failed the course overall with a total mark of at
least 30%. This course will be similar to PHSI 191 although there will be no laboratory
component, and it will have significantly more tutorial-style contact. The laboratory
component of a student’s internal assessment in the 2016 first semester course will be
carried over to the Summer School course.

PHYSICS OF HEALTH SCIENCES - CAS PY 104 – 4 US Credits
Recommended for students majoring in athletic training, physical therapy, or speech,
language & hearing sciences. A one-semester physics course for students who do not
require a two-semester sequence. Students must register for two sections: a lecture
section and a laboratory section.

GENERAL PHYSICS - CAS PY 211 – 4 US Credits
For premedical students who seek a more analytical course than CAS PY 105/106, and for
science majors and engineers. Basic principles of physics emphasizing Newtonian
mechanics, conservation laws and thermal physics. Students must register for two
sections: a lecture section and a laboratory section.
GENERAL PHYSICS - CAS PY 212 – 4 US Credits
For science majors, engineers, and premedical students who wish a more analytical course
than CAS PY 105/106. Basic principles of physics emphasizing electricity, magnetism, and
geometrical optics. Students must register for two sections: a lecture section and a
laboratory section.
PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE - CAS PH 270 – 4 US Credits
Uses scientific examples from the study of physics, biology, and mind. Focuses on the aims
of science, the nature of scientific understanding, the structure and interpretation of
scientific theories, and the development of science.

COLLEGE PHYSICS I - PHYS 111 – 3 US Credits
Non-calculus introduction to vectors, kinematics, Newtonian mechanics of translational,
rotational, and oscillatory motion, energy and momentum conservation, and
thermodynamics. Students will gain an understanding of analytical description of motion
and application of conservation laws; develop scientific insight and proficiency in solving
representative problems.
COLLEGE PHYSICS LAB I - PHYS 111L – 1 US Credit
Laboratories cover selected topics in introductory mechanics, including freefall, uniform
circular motion, work-energy, collisions, rotational motion, and harmonic motion.
Students will gain experience and familiarity with basic measuring devices and simple
mechanics equipment. Understand measurement errors and their propagation, plotting
and interpretation of data, the connection between theory and experiment for selected
topics in elementary mechanics.

This course is a continuation of Physics 111. Lecture and discussion of electricity and

quantum mechanics, atoms, and subatomic particles. As time permits, development of
physical ideas placed in cultural and historical perspective.

Damped and driven oscillators, mechanical and acoustic waves. Electrostatics: electric
field and potential, capacitors, and dielectrics. Currents and DC circuits. Magnetic field.
PHYSICS 1C. PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS: ELECTRODYNAMICS, OPTICS,
AND SPECIAL RELATIVITY – 5 US Credits
Ampere law, Faraday law, inductance, and LRC circuits. Maxwell equations in integral and
differential form. Electromagnetic waves. Light, geometrical, and physical optics. Special
relativity.
PHYSICS 4AL. PHYSICS LABORATORY FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS: MECHANICS – 2
US Credits
Experiments on measuring gravity, accelerated motion, kinetic and potential energy,
impulse and momentum, damped and driven oscillators, resonance and vibrating strings.
Computer data acquisition and analysis. Introduction to error analysis, including
distributions and least-squares fitting procedures.
