What is communication?

Communication
“The act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express
or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc., to
someone else” (Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, n.d.).
*Note – INTRAPERSONAL communication
Communication that you have with yourself
Symbolic
• “words, sounds, signs, behaviors”
• Relationship between symbol and meaning is arbitrary

Shared Code
• Encoding/Decoding is required
• Agreement is required between just TWO parties
• Very little “universal”

Linked to culture
• Culture is “shared beliefs, values and practices of a group
of people” (O’hair & Wiemann, 2004, p. 3).
• Cultures and subcultures exist when there is agreement
amongst people
Intentional
• Requires attention & conscious effort
• Giving Information vs. Giving Off Information
• Tend to see control of as more capable
• Effective communicators are aware of the impacts of both
Mediated
• A medium is required (sometimes referred to as
CHANNEL).
• A medium is “the vehicle to transport or carry the
symbols” (O’hair & Wiemann, 2004, p. 5).
• The medium and effects the message’s meaning
Transactional
• Sender/receiver roles are required
• Asynchronous vs. Synchronous communication

Why do we communicate?
• Self Presentation
“working to communicate an image of who we are and
how we want to be perceived” (Canary, Cody & Manusov,
2008, p. 12).
• Relational
“working to develop, maintain, or neglect particular
relationships” (Canary, Cody & Manusov, 2008, p. 15).
• Instrumental
“trying to get others to do us a favor or provide some
kind of resource” (Canary, Cody & Manusov, 2008, p. 16).
