To provide specialist nursing support to Maxillofacial clinicians, Orthodontists and hospital

Key result areas:
Specific duties/skills applicable to oral surgery

Assist clinician with care of IV sedation patients when on QVH site; monitor observations as
required.

Assist with minor oral surgery and other maxillofacial surgery procedures ensuring aseptic
technique is adhered to when required.

Advise patients, relatives or carers on pre and post-operative instructions for maxillofacial
surgery.

Assist with and maintain smooth running of consultation clinics within Maxfac and ENT
including Trauma.

Maintain registration with the General Dental Council.
Ensure mandatory CPD requirement is obtained by attending study sessions, completing
online study etc
Maintain and organise own mandatory training.

Specific duties/skills applicable to orthodontics













Advise patients on oral hygiene and how to care for their braces, retainers and appliances.
Chair side assisting with orthodontic procedures using 4 handed technique.
Maintain patients orthodontic records including X-Rays and Models
Be open to undertaking impression taking training.
Maintain smooth running of orthodontic clinics and undertake clinic preparation on all levels.
Specific duties/skills applicable to radiography trained staff
Ensure equipment is set to take radiographs during the day.
With consent of patient ensure all jewellery and other valuable items are removed, stored
safely during procedure and returned when process is completed.
Download digital patient images and transfer to requisite databases.
Troubleshoot and, if possible correct, local IT problems ie errors between PACS and CRIS
systems.
Report any issues to RPS, clinical manager or Radiography manager.
Uphold local rules for ionizing radiation ie ensure radiation badges are worn and that they are
changed bi monthly.
Ensure IRMER is kept up to date (every 5 years)
Ensure justification of images at ALL times

General:

Receive and prepare patients for treatment.

Responsible for the well-being of patients undergoing treatment in the unit.

Assist with the smooth running of maxillofacial surgery and orthodontic treatment and
consultation clinics.

Ensure all documentation is completed ie sedation documentation, local anaesthetic book
coding forms etc.

Ensure clinic notes are in order when on clinic prep.

Flexibility to cover late running clinics if required.

Assist with mentoring all new members of staff and post graduate students ie Maxfac module
students.

Work on own initiative in oral & maxillofacial and orthodontic clinics with the support of the
senior staff.

Advise and assist in management of consumable stock levels and equipment.

Assist with provision and prepare clinical equipment and materials for daily use in the
maxillofacial and orthodontic clinics. This will include the assembly of high-speed hand pieces,
monitors, diagnostic scopes and other instruments.

Assess equipment readiness for use. Ensure pre safety checks are carried out.

Report any problems to EME or manufacturer; completing necessary documentation

Assist with ensuring the smooth running of the Synergy service reporting any problems to the
Synergy coordinator.

Ensure high standards of cleanliness and all safeguards against cross-infection are maintained
following IPACT protocols.

Assist with health & safety, COSHH and local risk assessment: report as necessary.

Assist in carrying out audit or research & development initiatives as requested.

Assist with the undertaking of link nurse roles as required and directed

