MAN Metropolitan Area Network DEFINITION : A large computer network which extends to a city or to a large university campus is termed as metropolitan area network or MAN. WAN Wide Area Network DEFINITION : A WAN spans a large geographic area, such as a state, province or country. WANs often connect multiple smaller networks, such as local area networks (LANs) or metro area networks (MANs). CAN Campus Area Network DEFINITION : Campus Area Network (CAN) is a network of multiple interconnected Local Area Networks (LAN) in a limited geographical area such as a University campus or corporate campus. PAN Personal Area Network DEFINITION : A personal area network - PAN - is a computer network organized around an individual person. Personal area networks typically involve a mobile computer, a cell phone and a handheld computing device such as a PDA. PROTOCOL DEFINITION : Protocol is most often used when talking about the rules of government or official agencies. It is derived from the French and refers to the correct rules of etiquette for diplomats. FIREWALL DEFINITION : a security system consisting of a combination of hardware and software that limits the exposure of a computer or computer network to attack from crackers; commonly used on local area networks that are connected to the internet. BANDWIDTH DEFINITION : a data transmission rate; the maximum amount of information (bits/second) that can be transmitted along a channel GATEWAY DEFINITION : A node that interconnects two or more disparate networks, both physically and logically, serving as a protocol converter (e.g., PSTN to IP) and media converter (e.g., electrical twisted pair to optical fiber) as necessary. See also IGF, node, and protocol converter. NETWORK TOPOLOGY DEFINITION : a topology is a usually schematic description of the arrangement of a network, including its nodes and connecting lines. There are two ways of defining network geometry: the physical topology and the logical (or signal) topology. BUS TOPOLOGY DEFINITION : every workstation is connected to a main cable called the bus. Therefore, in effect, each workstation is directly connected to every other workstation in the network. RING TOPOLOGY DEFINITION : the workstations are connected in a closed loop configuration. Adjacent pairs of workstations are directly connected. Other pairs of workstations are indirectly connected, the data passing through one or more intermediate nodes. MESH TOPOLOGY DEFINITION : employs either of two schemes, called full mesh and partial mesh. In the full mesh topology, each workstation is connected directly to each of the others. In the partial mesh topology, some workstations are connected to all the others, and some are connected only to those other nodes with which they exchange the most data. TREE TOPOLOGY DEFINITION : uses two or more star networks connected together. The central computers of the star networks are connected to a main bus. Thus, a tree network is a bus network of star networks. STAR TOPOLOGY DEFINITION : When a network is set up using a star topology configuration, all the components of the network are connected to a central "hub" which is usually the router or a switch. This can raise several issues as the technology changes and the network grows. The components within the star topology configuration will need to adapt and grow as changes happen in the future SERVER DEFINITION : In information technology, a server is a computer program that provides services to other computer programs (and their users) in the same or other computers. The computer that a server program runs in is also frequently referred to as a server (though it may be used for other purposes as well). ISP Internet service provider. DIRECTORY DEFINITION : Also called folder. an organizing unit in a computer's file system for storing and locating files. ETHERNET DEFINITION : Originally known as Alto Aloha Network, Ethernet is a widely used local-area network (LAN) protocol originally created by Xerox PARC in 1973 by Robert Metcalfe and others (U.S. Patent # 4,063,220). Being the first network to provide Carrier Sense Multiple Access / Collision Detection (CSMA/CD), Ethernet is a fast and reliable network solution that is still widely used today.
