Drug Distribution System
Despensing to Outpatient
Outpatient or Ambulatory:
Ambulatory refers to the patient who do not occupy any bed in the hospital or do not get any
inpatient service and health care is given in the physicians office or in hospital or in health care
centers or other places where outpatients usually get health care.
Outpatient/ Ambulatory patient load can be subdivided in to below categories:
a) Emergency Care:Emergency care is a place where patients usually gets emergency health care from the health
care providers when needed.
b) Referral health care:Referral health care service is beyond primary health care service, here out patients are
provided specialized modern health care service by the health care service providers.
c) Primary health care service:Primary health care service is the service which is provided to the majority of the out
patient every day. The section of the health care service is most crowded. Here patient
comes for the regular checkup, preventive health maintenance etc.
Scopes of the activities in the pharmaceutical service of Ambulatory:
1. Obtaining and documenting patient medication history.
2. Monitoring the safety and efficacy of drug therapy.
3. Providing drug information to the prescribes.
4. Assisting the prescribes in the proper selection of drugs.
5. Utilizing the assessment skill in acute and chronic disease management.
6. Detecting and reporting adverse drug reaction and drug drug interaction.
7. Educating the general public about the drug and medication through consultation.
8. Participating in the educational programs for advancement of skills.
9. Supervising the storage, preparation and dispensing of drug.
10. Developing the delivery system of pharmacy service.
Minimum Standards of Ambulatory care Pharmaceutical Service:There are some minimum requirements of Ambulatory care service and those are given in
below:1. The ambulatory pharmacy program must be directed by a qualified Pharmacist.
2. The appropriate choice of drug, dosage, route of administration and amount of drug must be
verified by a pharmacist.
3. All medication that will be dispensed to patient must be labeled and packaged according to the
standard rule.
4. Before administrating any new drug to a patient pharmacist must inform the patient about the
medication and its effect.
5. All drugs at the ambulatory care service must be controlled.
Location of dispensing area:1. A separate outpatient pharmacy is available.
2. A combined inpatient and outpatient unit with service provided from same window.
3. A combined inpatient and out patient unit service provided from separate window.
