Position Description
Title: Zika Pregnancy Registry Coordinator – Nurse Consultant (Limited Term)

Supervisor: Georgetta Alverson, Birth Defects and Cancer Surveillance Section Manager,
Vital Health Statistics, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS)
Purpose: The individual in this position will be responsible for the coordination and
collaboration with state and local communicable disease experts to identify Zika
Pregnancy Registry eligible cases in Michigan. This position will conduct investigations of
pregnant women with laboratory evidence of the Zika virus infection, as well as their
infants. The data will collected will be used to update clinical care recommendations, plan
for services for pregnant women and their families affected by the Zika virus, and to
improve prevention of Zika infection during pregnancy. This work will be accomplished
through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, with close
collaboration with the staff from the Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases Section,
the Michigan Birth Defects Registry and the Michigan vital statistics system.

on a wide range of activities, including but not limited to:




Coordinate the investigation and reporting of pregnant women residing in
Michigan with laboratory evidence of the Zika virus infection during pregnancy
and their infants, with state-based infectious disease experts, with input from
maternal child experts and birth defects surveillance experts.
Communicate with local health departments and health care providers and
coordinate clinical specimens for submission to the Michigan Department of
Health and Human Services (MDHHS) laboratory, and report probable and
confirmed cases.
Coordinate with birth defects and vital records staff as needed to identify
potential sources of case information.
Coordinate and collaborate with birth defects registry staff on cases of birth
defects with a known association to Zika infection and in the collection of
additional data on these cases.

Conduct case follow up with physician to obtain case information relative to
management of the pregnancy, the Zika infection believed to have occurred and
diagnostic information on the development of the fetus.

Ensure complete case reporting of all pregnant women residing in Michigan and
their infants that meet the CDC Zika Registry inclusion criteria.

Upload data collected on eligible Zika exposed pregnancies to the US Zika
Pregnancy Registry database in a complete and timely manner.

Collaborate with local communicable disease experts on data collection for cases
and oversee payment for services by local health staff.

Collect and conduct follow up of clinical data at designated time points for
Registry-eligible pregnant women and their infants.

Update protocols and other elements relative to the investigation, surveillance
and documentation of the Michigan Zika Pregnancy Registry.

Participate in outbreak investigations and special epidemiologic projects on Zika
virus and other arbovirus diseases.

Participate in meetings at the state, local and federal level to assure close
coordination with all partners in this effort.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Education: A master’s degree in nursing, public health or a health field. Possess a
Michigan Registered Nursing License in good standing.
Experience: Three years of professional experience in maternal-infant health, services.
Important Skills and Characteristics:
 Clinical experience as a nurse, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or related
profession, experience in maternal-infant health is particularly valuable.
 Knowledge of infectious disease epidemiology, especially arbovirus diseases.
 Experience with conducting potentially case-sensitive investigations with healthcare providers.
 Ability to provide leadership to other professionals in health care.
 Excellent speaking, organizational, and writing skills.
 Experience with Access, Excel and SAS or similar statistical software packages
relative to analysis and management of epidemiologic data.
 Maintain records, and prepare reports and correspondence related to the work.
 Knowledge of state and local public health and clinical delivery systems and
programs.
 Ability to provide nursing consultation in this specialty area.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: In state travel may be required for
investigation, reporting and follow up of pregnant women residing in Michigan with
laboratory evidence of the Zika virus infection during pregnancy and their infants.
Position lifts and transports applicable materials necessary to investigate, collect and
conduct follow up. Valid driver’s license is required.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS:
Occasional Leaders: Occasional leaders lead some projects and serve as a team member
on others.
IMPACT on PROJECTS, SERVICES and OPERATIONS: The purpose of the Michigan Zika
Pregnancy Registry within the Vital Records and Health Statistics Section in the Michigan
Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) will be to contribute to a national
effort to assess the full scope of risk to newborns associated with in utero exposure to
the Zika virus.
