The planets (and planetoids) in our solar system all have names taken from
the gods of Greek and Roman mythology. Can you match each planet to the
description of the god it is named after?
Planet
Description of god
Planet
Roman god of war, identified with the Greek Ares.
The Romans regarded him as the father of Romulus,
and the founder and protector of their nation.
Mercury
Venus
Mars
Jupiter
King of the Roman gods, identified with the Greek
god Zeus. The many mortal lovers (such as Europa,
Io and Ganymede) of this god have given us the
names for the many moons of this planet.
A Roman god, identified with the Greek god
Hermes. He carried a sacred branch as the emblem
of peace. Like Hermes he was the messenger of
Jupiter, and the god of eloquence, of trade, and of
thievery. He also conducted souls to the
underworld.
The Roman goddess of love and beauty, springtime
and flowers, identified with the Greek Aphrodite.
She is said to have been born from the foam of the
sea, and to have been immediately carried to the
home of the gods on Olympus, where they were all
charmed with her extreme beauty. She was the
mother of Cupid, and the Trojan hero Aeneas.
Description of god
This Greek god was the son of Gaea, the earth. He
was personified as the heavens and he was the
father of Saturn and grandfather of Jupiter, among
others.
Saturn
A Roman god of water, identified with Poseidon, the
Greek god of the ocean. He was also feared as the
author of earthquakes and floods, which he caused
and stopped according to his will with his trident.
Uranus
A brother of Jupiter and Neptune, this god ruled the
dark underworld. His wife Proserpina was the
daughter of Ceres, whom he kidnapped from the
upper world to make his queen. As the king of the
underworld, he was thought to be the giver of the
blessings that come from the earth, such as metals.
Neptune
An ancient Italian god of harvest or time of reaping,
identified with the Greek Cronus. He was usually
pictured carrying a sickle or scythe. Before
becoming a god he is said to have ruled in Italy
during the golden age.
