About The Hammurabi Code
• A code of Law is a written collection of the laws that apply to
the people ruled by one government.
• Copies of Hammurabi’s Laws were found all over his empire,
this means he expected all citizens to obey his laws.

Punishment
• “If a Freeman has put out the eye of another
Freeman, they shall put out his eye.”-Law 197
• “If someone breaks a bone of another
freeman, they shall break his bone.”- Law 197
• “If a son strikes his father his hand shall be
hewn off.”- Law 195
Payments For Crimes
• “If a “purchaser” does not bring the merchant and witnesses
before whom he bought the article, and its owner brings
witnesses who identify it, then the “purchaser” is a thief and
shall be put to death, and the owner receives the stolen
article.”– Law 7
• “If anyone takes a male or female slave of the [king’s] court,
or a male or female slave of a freed man, outside the city
gates, he shall be put to death.”- Law 15
• Law 21: “If anyone breaks into a house to steal, he shall be put
to death there and be buried there.”
What You Need to Pay For Crimes
• “If anyone opens his ditches to water his crop, but careless,
and the water floods the field of his neighbor, then he shall
pay his neighbor corn for his loss.”- Law 55
• “If anyone gives to another silver, gold, or anything else to
keep, he shall show everything to some witness, draw up a
contract, and then hand it over for safekeeping.”- Law 122
• “If anyone strikes the body of a man higher in rank than he,
he shall receive sixty blows [hits] with an ox whip.”- Law 202

• Hammurabi expected his citizens to obey his
laws and his commands.
• Hammurabi had 200 laws carved in cuneiform.
• Law 55- expected you to pay your neighbor
back in corn.

Main Idea of Mesopotamia's Laws
In Mesopotamia the men and rich people, were valued
more than women and poor people. You need a
contract for the things you by such as: family, and the
things you purchase. Hammurabi ruled his citizens by
making sure they all follow the laws. In Mesopotamia's
laws your payments can go from having to pay your
neighbor corn to being put to death.
