Early city states were controlled by aristocrats or kings

Most slaves were prisoners of war, but others bought and traded

Some had good jobs, others treated harshly

With no land, Greeks needed to find ways to lead their people

Conquered and made them slaves for support of their culture

Colonies had a positive economic and cultural effect on Greece
Merchants gained importance due to wealth

Athens continued to build democracy through its
people, not war.
Spartans feared the democratic trend in Athens
Aristocrats wanted to keep power
A council of leaders who were Aristocrats
Created laws and punishments
A formation of heavily fortified soldiers
Did not need horses, so many men could join
Groups helped shape governments b/c all men
needed to be accounted for
Began as champions of the citizens
Did not allow others to be involved in decision
making.
Tired to be fair but could not keep promises,
some ruled harshly
Solon was elected and chose to put Athens of the
path to democracy by ending some slavery
practices and pushing people to vote
Reduced the power of the rich
More people(citizens) could vote
Legal decision in the hands of people (Jury)
Pay for jury service, allowed more people to
participate
Class system began to change
Citizenship given rights and responsibilities
Ed. helped promote democracy
