Mission Statement The College promotes and advances the highest standards of patient care with respect to Mohs surgery and cutaneous oncology through fellowship training, research, education and public advocacy. Vision Statement To be recognized as the premier organization for education and research in skin cancer for the practice of Mohs surgery. What are the skin cancer initiatives and/or programs of the organization? We have ongoing training for Mohs Surgeons to ensure they are the top-‐trained Mohs Surgeons in the country. We provide patient education materials in the form of a website, brochure and social media outreach, to bring awareness to the prevention of skin cancer. How do your organization’s activities/program support the National Council’s mission and activities? Our programs focus on expanding the knowledge of those treating patients that have been diagnosed with skin cancer. We have also established a patient information website, www.skincancermohssurgery.org that explains not only how to prevent skin cancer, but options for treatment once diagnosed. We have become more active recently in lobbying for changes in legislation and regulation that will protect patients, particularly in the area of being able to continue to have dermatologic care. What benefits do you and/or your organization expect to receive from membership to the National Council? As a member of the National Council we hope to benefit from a shared awareness of the efforts to prevent skin cancer. In addition, we look forward to being able to leverage the power of so many like-‐minded organizations coming together to affect the necessary changes in legislation and regulation to protect patients. We plan on serving as an active member of the Council by attending meetings and sharing our resources with the Council. We already have positive relationships with many of the Council's current members and hope to expand our opportunities for collaboration. As a member of National Council, how does your organization expect to contribute to the mission, goals and activities of the National Council? As noted above, we will be able to contribute to the Council's activities by actively participating in the Council's meetings and calls for action. Our members offer free screenings and a self-‐exam kit. How do your organization’s activities/program support the National Council’s mission and activities? We care about public and surgeon education, research, and advocacy to treat and prevent skin cancer. Our many programs and external activities support that. What benefits do you and/or your organization expect to receive from membership to the National Council? Assistance in new ways to reduce skin cancer through shared action, shared information, advocacy, and common messaging, and to increase awareness. The primary mission of the American Society for Mohs Surgery is to improve physician performance and patient health through regular medical education courses with an emphasis on skin cancer, dermatologic surgery, and Mohs surgery. a. Promote the highest standards of patient care relative to Mohs surgery for the surgical removal of skin cancer and other appropriate malignancies; b. To establish quality assurance and regular peer review of Mohs surgeons; c. To provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and methodology for Mohs surgery and related basic sciences; d. To promote the professional education of its members and medical community in the principles and practice of Mohs surgery; e. To encourage research into all methods of microscopically controlled removal of malignant tissue; f. And to provide information for public education in Mohs surgery. What are the skin cancer initiatives and/or programs of the organization? The ASMS currently sponsors four (4) CME activities annually, each with a slightly different focus: The education of physicians in the most basic aspects of Mohs surgery; familiarization of Mohs surgeons with various characteristics of basal and squamous cell carcinoma (the tumors most commonly treated by Mohs surgery); exposure of dermatologists to a broad range of skin cancer topics, including latest advances in melanoma and NMSC diagnosis and treatment (frequently presented in an audience interaction format); and training in specific reconstruction techniques based on the characteristics of the final defect, anatomic location, and other patient factors. How do your organization’s activities/program support the National Council’s mission and activities? We are a medical society comprised of Mohs surgeons, pathologist and Mohs technicians. Therefore, our formal educational activities focus primarily on the surgical treatment of skin cancer. Our members also are attuned to the importance of ongoing research in skin cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment, and regularly share this information with patients. A number of ASMS members are involved in academia and/or serve on faculty for other dermatologic CME activities at the local, state, national and international level. Others are active on American Academy of Dermatology or American Society for Dermatologic Surgery boards and committees, and these organizations strongly advocate patient safety and education in areas such as sun avoidance/protection and dancers of tanning bed use. Many also participate in community skin cancer screenings to promote public awareness and emphasize the importance of early diagnosis/treatment and overall skin health. What benefits do you and/or your organization expect to receive from membership to the National Council? Our organization will benefit from the National Council’s publications and announcements to support our educational efforts, as above. We may utilize NCSCP speakers for some of our educational courses, and you would be welcome to exhibit to make our attendees aware of your important efforts in skin cancer prevention. We also would be interested in joining forces to help protect skin health and safety through legislative measures. OUR MISSION: We raise sun safety awareness in New Jersey and help prevent melanoma through education and early detection. We are unique in that we are a doctor-‐led, prevention focused nonprofit. OUR IMPACT: We save lives by educating people about melanoma and what they can do to prevent it. What are the skin cancer initiatives and/or programs of the organization? We provide sun safety awareness through lectures, skin cancer screenings, sun safety workshops, and online resources. And most recently, we developed and launched a unique, free, online Enright Sun Safety Certification ™ program for ages 13 and over, and a Trainer/Educator version. This year, we will launch interactive/multimedia versions of our Certification program for ages 5 and over. You can participate in this first-‐of-‐a-‐kind program at www.enrightmelanomafoundation.org. How do your organization’s activities/program support the National Council’s mission and activities? We participate on the New Jersey Melanoma Task Force, and the statewide Regional Chronic Disease Coalitions, where we focus on raising sun safety awareness, advocacy, education and early detection of melanoma. What benefits do you and/or your organization expect to receive from membership to the National Council? We are hoping to make connections nationwide so that we can learn from others and share our knowledge and resources. Also, the opportunity to meet and connect with other skin cancer prevention professionals. As a member of National Council, how does your organization expect to contribute to the mission, goals and activities of the National Council? We would be honored to join The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention by adding our voice to reduce skin cancer incidence through awareness, education prevention, early detection, and advocacy. We would also like to share with others our unique Enright Sun Safety Certification (TM) program.
