Gifted Programs Overview Clyde Hill November 21, 2016 Gifted Program Overview Gifted services provide instruction in the core content areas of language arts, social studies, science and math. Instruction is provided at an accelerated pace around an essential question that leads students to more complex levels of understanding. Instructional Design Conceptual Knowledge Dates, times, people, elements, vocabulary Procedural Knowledge Factual Knowledge Gifted Skills and strategies of the discipline Traditional Concepts, generalizations, principles, theories Curriculum and Instruction . . . • Allow students to spend more time on high levels of questioning and discussion rather than spending time gaining factual information. • Begin with big ideas, use of sophisticated note-taking tools, self-directed learning options, and varied instructional methods. • Allow students to work as a disciplinarians in the discipline, framing questions, generating ideas and multiple perspectives, researching to find hypotheses, analyzing the hypotheses and presenting conclusions. • Provide sophisticated levels of complexity by using more divergent and analytical questions, aligning instruction with the highest levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy, and focusing on broad concepts that relate to multiple content areas. • Focus on advanced concepts and complex ideas, which requires that curriculum be adapted or extended to meet students’ needs.
