Habitat and ecology 1,2 Hab i tat an d Ecol ogy The species inhabits tropical deciduous forest. It flowers between October and December, and produces fruits between December and March (Arias et al. 1997). The seedlings only grow under the shade of nurse plants (Flores-Martnez et al. 2008). R evi ewer/s Superina, M. & Goettsch, B.K. Con tri b u tor/s Ju sti fi cati on Mammillaria huitzilopochtli has a very narrow range, however, it occurs at a very high density and the decline in population is not known to be sufficient to trigger a red lisitng. Hence, it is listed as Least Concern. Special attention should be given to the effect of goat trampling on the population. Population 1,2 Pop u l ati on There are only seven subpopulations of M. huitzilopochtli in 1058 ha, with an average density of 1718 individuals/ha. (Peters and Martorell 2000). There is a slight population decline. The species has an intrinsic limitation for population growth, and seedling establishment is very low. Pop u l ati on Tren d Decreasing Threats 1,2 M aj or Th reats Climate change is a potential threat to the species. Under climate change scenarios in which temperature was increased by 2C and the precipitation decreased by 15% with respect to current climate conditions (approximately between year 2060 and year 2100), the species reduced its present range dramatically (Tllez-Valds and Dvila 2003). The species has an intrinsic limitation for population growth, and seedling establishment is very low. The populations are threatened by goat trampling (Peters and Martorell 2000). Conservation actions 1,2 Con servati on Acti on s The species is legally protected in Mexico by the national list of species at risk of extinction, NOM-059SEMARNAT-2010, where it is listed under category subject to special protection (Pr; SEMARNAT 2010). However, according to Flores-Martnez and Manzanero (2005) the species should be listed in a higher category, that is "in risk of extinction". The species occurs within the Tehuacn-Cuicatln Biosphere Reserve (Mndez-Larios et al. 2006). References 1. Arias, S., Valverde, T. & Zavala-Hurtado, A. 2013. Mammillaria huitzilopochtli .
