MOCA is a statewide non-profit dedicated to educating the public and medical community about ovarian cancer, providing support to women and families impacted by the disease and funding the research needed to detect ovarian cancer early and treat it properly. Local residents are invited to attend the event which is held in honor of two area women recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Claudette Falk of Bloomington and Donna Wojcik of Milaca were both diagnosed with ovarian cancer within the past year. The event is planned by close friends of Falk and Wojcik, who have set a goal to raise $10,000 for MOCA through the fundraiser. The event starts at 1 p.m. and will feature dinner, dancing, raffle prizes and a live auction. Live auction items include an autographed photo from Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin, four packs of tickets to Nickelodeon Universe and Sea Life Minnesota Aquarium at the Mall of America, a one-night stay in a family suite at the Radisson Hotel Bloomington by Mall of America and many other items. A photo booth will also be available for fun photos and participants will have the chance to purchase MOCA’s “Tie it Teal” shoelaces, which is a statewide campaign to spread the word about the symptoms of ovarian cancer. Tickets to the dinner are $7 for adults and $5 for children. Children three and under are free. “We thought it was important to hold a night to support those who are fighting this disease, honor those who have lost their lives because of it and also provide a sense to hope to survivors, friends and family,” said event coordinator Renee Fochs. “We want to do what we can in our community to raise awareness and support the women affected by ovarian cancer.” Ovarian cancer is the fifth-leading cause of cancer death among women and is the deadliest gynecologic cancer. Nearly 400 women in Minnesota will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year. “We truly appreciate these sorts of community efforts which raise money for MOCA’s research and programming and make a difference for Minnesota women and families,” said Kathleen Gavin, MOCA executive director. For more information or to purchase tickets to the event, please contact Evie at (763) 242-7470 or Christina at (763) 221-9744. Live auction donations are still being accepted.
