3rd ACTRIS WP3 Workshop 2013 SIDE EVENTS VISIT TO THE MUSEUM OF GEOASTROPHYSICS AND “DORIDES” TELESCOPE AT N.O.A. You are cordially invited to join the tour organized within the ACTRIS WP3 Athens workshop at NOA’s Museum of Geoastrophysics (http://www.noa.gr/museum/english/index_en.html) and the “Dorides” Telescope Dome Tuesday evening, 8th October 2013 19:00 to 21:00 Walking tour from Philippos hotel to the National Observatory of Athens (1.3km) Our walk begins at Philippos hotel. We will head to the Acropolis museum, in order to start walking up the famous Dionysiou Areopagitou Street which surrounds Acropolis and provides the best view of Parthenon. We will pass the entrance to the ancient Theatre of Dionysus which constitutes the first stone theater and home to Sophocles, Aeschylus, Euripides and Aristophanes. After Makrygianni Street, buildings cease on the north side of this street and give place to the archaeological site of the Acropolis. We will see the Parthenon (designed by the architects Kallikrates and Iktinos as the home of the giant statue of Athena). Other monuments on the sacred rock of Acropolis are the Propylea, built by Mnesicles during Pericles administration, nearby is the Temple of Athens Nike that was built on the same period by Kalikrates, and the Erecthion which sits on the most sacred site of the Acropolis where Poseidon and Athena had their contest over who would be the Patron of the city. 3rd ACTRIS WP3 Workshop 2013 SIDE EVENTS As we’ll walk to the end of the street, we will pass by the Odeon of Herodes Atticus – known as the "Herodeon". It was built in 161 AD by the Athenian magnate Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife, Aspasia Annia Regilla. It was used as a venue for music concerts with a capacity of 5,000. It lasted intact until it was destroyed and turned into a ruin by the Heruli in 267 AD. At the end of our walk we will reach the National Observatory of Athens historical premises. The National Observatory of Athens (N.O.A.) is the oldest research center in Greece founded in 1842 thanks to a donation by Baron George Sinas. The neoclassical ‘Sinas” building was the first observatory of Athens built by the well-known Danish architect Theophil Hansen on the Nymphs Hill in the historical centre of Athens. An important collection of astronomical, seismological, meteorological, time and geodesy instruments of the 19th and 20th centuries is now housed in the restored “Sinas” building: the museum of Geoastrophysics. The permanent collection comprises four thematic exhibitions: “Time and space”, “Astronomical observations”, “Meteorology” and “Seismology”. The visitor will admire, in their context, instruments which have been used to determine Athens exact time, to draw the map of Greece, to observe the wonders of the sky, to assist in weather forecasting and last but not least, to monitor and evaluate continuous seismic activity. The geoastrophysical historical path leads the visitor from the Sinas building to the Dorides Dome on the Pnyx Hill, where ancient Greek astronomer Meto realised his unique observations of solar and lunar motion. This telescope of NOA was made in 1902 by Gautier and is still in use for visitors. It is a refractor with double achromatic lenses of 40cm diameter and has 5m focal length. Its tube is mounted on a socalled German-type equatorial mounting. AFTER the tour the most popular area of Athens’ city center (Thisseio, Plaka, Monastiraki) is at 5 minutes walking distance and anyone is free to walk around and enjoy a lovely dinner. 3rd ACTRIS WP3 Workshop 2013 SIDE EVENTS JOINT ACTRIS WP3 DINNER AT “KATSOURMPOS” Our official dinner will take place at “Katsourmpos” restaurant Wednesday evening, 9th October 2013 20:00 The restaurant is accessible either on foot (1.9 km, 23 minutes) or by Metro.
