POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN NURSING (CANCER NURSING) MODULE DESCRIPTOR Module Title Colorectal Disease Nursing (Optional Module) Level of Learning 9 NFQ Pre-requisite course Primary degree or equivalent ECTS Credits 10 Module Coordinator Module Lecturers Ms Mary O'Neill Mr Paul Mahon Margaret Deasy, Ms. Aine Byrne & Nurses, Medical and Allied Health Professionals in the area of Cancer Services and Multidisciplinary Team will be included at appropriate stages in the module. Rationale of Module In Ireland colorectal cancer was reported as being the third leading cause of death in women, (after lung cancer and breast cancer) and the second leading cause of cancer death in men (after prostate cancer) in 2007-2009. Colorectal cancer accounted for 11% (in women) and 14% (in men) of all invasive cancers (excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer) for the same period. Although there is evidence of a steady decline in colorectal cancer mortality rates from 1994 to 2009, colorectal cancer cases are projected to increase by 34% in women and 45% in men between 2010 and 2020 (National Cancer Registry, 2011). Patients with Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are reported to be at an increased risk for developing a malignancy as well as morbidity from prolonged medical therapy (World Gastroenterology, 2009). Nurses working with colorectal disease require specialist knowledge and skills in the medical management and surveillance of colorectal disease as it is recognised that they are an essential component in the multidisciplinary management of this group of patients. Module Aims This module is build on Modules I and aims to provide the student with a knowledge base that exercises higher levels of judgement, discretion, decision making and skills required for the provision of specialist nursing care to patients with colorectal disease.
