ADVANCED ORTHODONTICS
Thank you for choosing our office.
TEMPORARY RETAINERS
In order to prevent your teeth from shifting while waiting for your final retainers, we are
providing you with temporary retainers to hold your teeth in place. Often, after removal
of braces, there is some additional bite settling which must be allowed to occur in order
to increase the stability of your orthodontic result. The temporary retainers do not allow
for this bite settling and therefore, should not be used once you have received your final
retainers.
Until your final retainers are placed, you should wear the temporary retainers at all
times except when eating, brushing your teeth, or playing contact sports. It has been
our experience that temporary retainers do not get lost, broken or chewed on by dogs
while they are in your mouth. On the rare occasions that the temporary retainer is not
in your mouth, it should be placed in the provided plastic case in a safe location.
Here are some additional tips for wear and care of your temporary retainers:
 Gently clean your temporary retainers with your toothbrush, cool water and, if
necessary, liquid soap
 Toothpaste can scratch the temporary retainers
 Keep the temporary retainers away from heat sources (hot water, dishwashers,
microwaves, direct sunlight) to prevent warpage
 Even if your temporary retainer is in its case, never leave the case where a dog
can get at it
 Never wrap the temporary retainer in a napkin; they are almost impossible to find
in the garbage
 Never put the temporary retainer in a pocket; they are fragile and crack easily
 When placing the temporary retainer in your mouth, seat the front of the retainer
first and then the back
 When removing the temporary retainer from your mouth, unseat the back of the
retainer first and then the front
 Never bite your retainer into place or click them in and out with your tongue
 If your temporary retainer cracks, does not seat correctly, or is lost, contact our
office immediately
 Once your final retainers are placed, keep your temporary retainer as possible
emergency retainers in case one of your final retainers becomes lost or broken
and needs to be replaced or repaired
**There will be a replacement fee assessed for a lost or broken temporary retainer**
