Retention
Important tips
Fixed wire - composite retainer
The active part of the orthodontic treatment finishes with
the removal of your braces. What comes next is the final, and
equally important, step called retention.
1. Wear your retainers as instructed
Fixed wire-composite retainer is basically a piece of strong
The retentive period is determined individually for each
patient by the orthodontist. Some children and adults have
to wear retainers longer than others to prevent any undesired
tooth movement that may occur after braces are taken off.
Some patients may require lifetime retention.
The safest way to keep your teeth in desired position is
combining fixed wire-composite and removable clear
retainers.
Clear “Essix” retainers
Clear “Essix” retainers are removable appliances that keep
teeth in correct new position while giving time for bone,
gums, lips and cheeks to adjust to the new situation. Retainers
must be worn exactly as instructed by your dentist or the
teeth might shift back to their original position. If you have
fixed wire composite retainers, you should wear them only
during the night.
Wearing a retainer makes sense only if you follow your
orthodontist’s instructions. Patients who do not have
fixed wire-composite retainers usually wear mobile
retainers according to the schedule displayed on the box.
If needed the regime is modified for each patient.
2. Keep your retainers clean
Keep your retainers clean simply by brushing with a
toothbrush and toothpaste. Brush both your teeth and
retainers after each meal. If you drop your retainers on
dirty surface do NOT disinfect them by boiling. Soak
them in antibacterial soap and rinse well.
3. Treat them with care
When retainers are not in your mouth they should always
be kept in a retainer case so they don’t get lost. Keep
them away from pets - they love chewing on them.
You will be additionally charged for retainer
replacement.
Patients who opt out of fixed retainers need
to wear mobile retainers according to the
following schedule:
1st & 2nd week after removal of braces - 24 h/day
3rd & 4th week after removal of braces - 20 h/day
5th & 6th week after removal of braces - 16 h/day
7th & 8th week after removal of braces - 12 h/day
You still need to visit for regular checkups after the active part
of the treatment is finished and we remove your braces.
First appointment should be two to three months after the
appliance removal. From then onwards remember to come
for a checkup twice a year (every six months) or as soon as you
notice changes in your bite or in the appearance of your teeth.
Remember to always bring your retainers for an orthodontic
appointment.
but elastic wire fixed onto lingual (inner) surface of six frontal
teeth (canine to canine) on upper or lower jaw.
It prevents spaces from opening up between the teeth and for
them to rotate out of the alignment, while at the same time
allowing them to move physiologically during mastication
(chewing). Maintaining of oral hygiene is important and you
should keep your fixed retainers as clean as your teeth.
The main part of orthodontist’s job is finished
with removal of your braces. It is up to you to
keep the perfect smile forever!
