Boys „should receive the HPV jab
too‟
th
July 29 , 2014
Boys should be vaccinated against
the HPV virus as well as girls to
protect them against some types of
cancer. The HPV virus has been
linked to a number of cancers
including head and neck, anal and
penile cancers. Protecting boys as
well as girls may cut the incidence of
SUN SAFETY
By Claire Pitcher, Registered Nurse
Summer often means spending time outside! It‟s always important to
think about sun safety. For Canadians, the sun‟s rays can be the most
damaging during summer. This is because we get more direct sunlight
during summer than any other time of year.
Even though the sun is really far away (like, 150 million kilometers
away!), it lets off a type of invisible light than can hurt the skin when it
reaches the Earth. This light is called ultra-violet or UV light. After a few
hours (or even minutes) in the sun, UV light can cause sunburns and
temporary eye damage. Over the long term, too much sun and UV light
can lead to things like skin cancer, premature aging of the skin (wrinkles
genital warts and several cancers
among both sexes.
and dark/age spots) and permanent eye damage. This is why sun
safety is so important!

Some people also use “tanning booths”. These booths have special
lights inside that release damaging UV rays while tanning the skin.
Sometimes people think that tanning booths provide a safer way to get a
tan. However, any amount of UV light can be damaging. Did you know
there is no such thing as a “safe” or “healthy” tan? Sometimes people
will think that going to a tanning booth before they go away on a sunny
holiday is a “safe” way to get a tan or to prevent sunburns while on
vacation. But, that‟s not true. Any tan is a sign of skin damage, whether
it comes from the sun or a tanning booth.
HPV Vaccine program results in
Australia
th
Aug 17 , 2014
In an Australian-led study it was
found that four years after the
national HPV vaccine program was
implemented there was a 90% drop
in genital warts for girls between 12
and 17 years, and a 73% decrease
for women between 18 and 26 years.
These results help determine how
effective the vaccine rollout has been
for Australia. Researchers hope to
continue the rollout of the HPV
vaccine program with the inclusion of
boys.

Now, you may be asking “How can I stay safe in the sun?” The answer
is to practice sun safety by:
 Finding shade whenever possible (under a tree, under a beach
umbrella)
 Avoiding direct sunlight
 Wearing sunscreen and re-applying after physical activity or
being in the water
 Wearing protective clothing (eg. UV-proof long sleeve shirts,
hats etc.)
 Avoiding tanning beds

HPV Vaccine Protects Against
Infection 8 Years Out
th
Aug 18 , 2014
A new long-term study shows that
the HPV vaccine appears to protect
against the sexually transmitted virus
for at least eight years. Among the
vaccinated preteens involved with the
study, none developed the disease or
conditions associated with HPV
during the study period. The study
researchers state that there are
indications that the vaccine is safe
and effective at preventing genital
warts and other diseases caused by
HPV.

Dr. Simon Dobson – Investigator (study
doctor) for B.C.
Dr. Simon Dobson is one of the Principal Investigators for the QUEST
study.
Dr. Dobson completed his medical
training at Newcastle University in
the United Kingdom before
moving to Houston Texas to
complete infectious disease
training at Baylor College of
Medicine. Dr. Dobson now resides
in BC and is the Head of the
Division of Infectious &
Immunological Diseases at BC
Children‟s Hospital.
Dr. Dobson‟s has also done a
previous study, called BCGov01, about the HPV vaccine (it was a
precursor to the QUEST HPV study). BCGov01 provided evidence that
2 shots of the HPV vaccine in girls offers similar protection to 3 shots in
young women. Watch a video describing the BCGov01 study.

Now that we know 2 shots of the HPV vaccine works in the short term,
the QUEST study will look at how long HPV protection will last and how
well the vaccine protects girls from getting HPV disease by comparing 2
doses versus 3 doses of HPV Vaccine.
