Course
description:
Examines human and animal behavior, relating experimental studies to practical
problems. Includes topics such as sensation/perception, learning, memory,
motivation, emotion, stress, development, intelligence, personality,
psychopathology, therapy, and social psychology. Part II of II.
Lecture 3 hours per week.
General
Course
Purpose:
To provide the student with a basic understanding of psychological concepts
and principles.
PSY 200 and PSY 201-202 contain similar course content. Students who take
PSY 200 cannot receive credit for either PSY 201 or PSY 202. Students who
take either PSY 201 or PSY 202 cannot receive credit for PSY 200.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Prerequisite: PSY 201. English 111 and 112 are suggested
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
-Explain how organisms learn through classical conditioning, operant
conditioning, and observational learning
-Identify processes involved in the encoding, storage, and retrieval of
information and how these processes impact the student’s memory
-Explain how people think using concepts, solving problems, and making
judgments
-Describe varying conceptualizations of intelligence and identify genetic and
environmental influences on intelligence; recognize the principals involved in
test construction
-Define stress and describe its effect on health; identify coping strategies and
explain how stress and health relate tothe student’s life
-Identify the major theoretical perspectives of personality and articulate their
similarities and differences; describe psychological findings on the self and
recognize the influence of the self in the student’s behavior
-Differentiate between abnormal and normal behavior; identify the symptoms
of major psychological disorders and explain what roles biological,
psychological, and sociocultural factors play in causing these disorders
-Identify the major psychotherapy and biomedical therapies used to treat

-You need to be present in class and perform in class presentations on
each chapter to receive credit.
-Attendance will be taken at the end of each class.
-If you leave class early you will not receive credit for that day.
-Students are required to attend all scheduled class meetings. Each
class attendance is worth 2 points.
-Because this is a hybrid course the course is divided between in
person and on line attendance.
-There are six in person classes in this course and the class
attendance/participation is worth a total of 12 points.
-You need to log into the course room at least 3 times per week.
-You need to perform the online activities and homework.
-You need to respond at least to one other student’s comments on the
assigned online activities for each chapter.
There are six online classes in this course and the participation is worth 12
points. 2 points per online class attendance.
-Late assignments and test will be only accepted if you have document
from a doctor stating that you were sick.
-After confirming with the instructor, you have three days to complete any
missed assignments or tests from the due date of an assignment or a test.
-Students should have the basic knowledge of how to use the internet, how
to sign in on NOVA Blackboard and how to access the course.
-Students need to know Microsoft word, PowerPoint, search for journal
articles and books at the NOVA library website.
-Students should possess proficient skills in typing using the keyboard.

If the emergency is non life threatening Contact Campus Police at
703-764-5000 to advise them of the situation.
-A building may need to be evacuated due to a fire or another unforeseen
emergency such as chemical spill, structural damage, or violence.
-In these situations, the fire alarm system or other alert notification
systems (text message, desktop computer alert, automated or live
broadcast calls, digital signage, and emergency warning alert system) may
be used to initiate a building evacuation; however, verbal commands from
staff, faculty, police or other emergency response personnel may also be
used.
-Whenever a fire alarm is activated or verbal commands are given,
all individuals must begin exiting the building and proceed to their
designated Assembly Area(s).
-During an Evacuation
• Remain calm.
• Immediately stop what you are doing.
• If time, conditions and safety permit, take important personal items with
you (i.e. car keys, purse, medication, glasses, etc.). Leave everything else.
Instruct students to do the same.
• Walk directly to the nearest exit, assisting students and visitors with
evacuation procedures. Move quickly; however, do not run, push or
crowd.
• Check doors for heat before opening by touching it near the top with the
back of your hand. Do NOT open a hot door.
• If smoke is present, stay low and crawl to your exit.
• Do NOT use elevators.
• Use handrails in stairwells, stay to the right.
• Keep noise to a minimum so you can hear emergency instructions.
• Assist people with disabilities/special needs and those unfamiliar with
evacuation procedures. (See below for more information on evacuation
procedures for individuals with disabilities/special needs).
• Once outside, move quickly away from the building and to your
Assembly Area, unless otherwise instructed.
• Report missing persons to emergency response personnel.
• Actively assist in keeping roadways and walkways clear for emergency
response personnel.
• Do NOT return to the building until instructed to do so.
