Algebra 1 November Newsletter Teacher: Mrs. Cosme Date: November 1st, 2016 Written By: Devin Ortega & Asher Raza Overview For Periods 4-5, students in Mrs. Cosme’s Class are taking Algebra 1 Math, (Advance Class). This advanced class prepares our math students, prior to other classes, with more knowledge, and better capability for their onset of learning Algebra. Objectives - For Marking Period 1 1. Apply associative, commutative, and distributive properties to algebraic expressions/equations. 2. Combine like terms in equations/expressions 3. Solving Algebraic equations, with variables on both sides. 4. Absolute Value, in Algebraic Equations and Expressions. 5. Literal Algebraic Equations - (Equations with 2 or more variables) Mrs. Cosme’s Class Lessons 2.1 - Variables & Expressions: A mathematical phrase which can contain numbers, operators (Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide) and at least one variable (like x or y) 2.2 - Order Of Operations: In mathematics and computer programming, the order of operations (or operator precedence) is a collection of rules that define which procedures to perform first in order to evaluate a given mathematical expression. 2.3 - Properties Of Numbers: There are four mathematical properties which involve addition. The properties are the commutative, associative, additive identity and distributive properties. 2.4- Rational/Irrational Numbers: An irrational number is a real number that cannot be expressed as a ratio of integers, as a fraction, non-perfect square, or a terminating decimal. A rational number is any number that can be expressed as the quotient or fraction p/q of two integers, a numerator p and a nonzero denominator q. 2.5- Absolute Value: The distance a number is away from 0. 2.6- Literal Equations: A literal equation is an equation where variables represent known values. Literal equations allow use to represent things like distance, time, interest, and slope as variables in an equation. Using variables instead of words is a real time-saver! Mrs. Cosme’s Class Algebra 1 Book Online - HW Textbook LINK: connected.mcgraw-hill.com To find out your child’s account username and password, go to... 1. Login With Your Child’s Account - They have been given the account username and password. 2. Once you’re on homepage click on ABC 3. From there you can search the lessons on which your child will be learning or studying.
