STORMS CGF3M Mon. Dec. 9, 2013 Tornadoes Inside a tornado- VIDEO The most common violent storms are thunderstorms Form when warm, moist, unstable air begins to rise Are most common in mid-afternoon Rising air is called updraft Cumulonimbus clouds are created by this updraft- can reach heights up to 20 KM into atmosphere Falling rain within the cloud causes some of the air to cool This cold air sinks- called a downdraft Combination of updrafts and downdrafts creates a thunderstorm All thunderstorms create lightning When particles collide within a cloud, they create friction Larger particles become negatively charged Smaller particles become positively charged When the difference in charge is great enough, electrons will “jump” in order to even out the charge, creating a lightning bolt. The lightning heats the air, causing it to expand quickly and explosively, resulting in the sound of thunder You see the lightning before you hear the thunder because light travels faster than sound Video: How Lightning Forms Lightning can also occur in clouds of snowstorms, dust storms, or volcanic eruptions Lightning can reach temperatures of more than 25 000C, causing severe burns of even death Video: What happens if you are stuck by lightning?
