NL ratified the Convention of Biological Diversity:
•The conservation of biodiversity
•Sustainable use of the components of biodiversity
•Sharing the benefits arising from (commercial) utilization
of genetic resources in a fair and equitable way
NL signed MoU with GBIF
Purpose of GBIF: to make the world's primary data
on biodiversity freely and universally available via the Internet.
• Both biodiversity and biodiversity data are
unevenly distributed around the world:

GBIF was established, in large part, to redress the
inequality of data distribution
Stichting NLBIF: Dutch Node of GBIF
Netherlands Biodiversity Information Facility
Objectives:
Sharing of biodiversity data, information and know-how available
in the Netherlands
Providing access for Dutch users to biodiversity data, information
and know-how in other countries
Develop ICT tools for data management, analysis, exchange, and
electronic dissemination worldwide

Netherlands Biodiversity Information Facility
Slow start, most projects launched in 2003
Budget: ca. 400,000 / year until March 2006, probably extension
http://www.nlbif.nl/
• Biodiversity databases on-line
• Connect these databases to GBIF via DiGIR
• Training in GBIF software (DiGIR, CIRCA, etc.)
• Species Banks
Type species: Anacropora forbesi Ridley, 1884
Total number of species estimated: 3.
Characteristics: Corals zooxanthellate, thinly branched ......
Ecology: Rare; if present, the corals are usually found in large patches .......
Range: From Seychelles to Fiji in the central Pacific.
Additional remarks: Due to their fragile shape, corals of this genus indicate
reef environments with little turbulence.
Key references: Veron and Wallace, 1984; Veron, 1986, 2000.
Metadatabase
Inventory of Dutch institutes and organisations
holding biodiversity information
Biodiversity data in the Netherlands:
Who is who?  names, addresses, websites
Who has what?  collections, observations
expertise
Future activities of NLBIF
•
Fund raising with collection institutes and VOFF to
 bring biodiversity information on-line
 digitise natural history collections
 develop on-line Species Banks
 supply electronic catalogues of names
 connect biodiversity databases to GBIF (via DiGIR)
NLBIF will keep Data Providers informed on the development of
policy documents by GBIF, ENBI, BioCASE on
• Data Sharing Agreement
• Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)
• Data Use Agreement
On-line databases: responsibility of institutes
ZMA, CBS, NHN already developed
policy documents for their databases
Zoological Museum of Amsterdam
• UvA is owner of all information
• Data can only be used for non-commercial purposes
• Copy data only for educational or research purposes
• Proper acknowledgement of data
• Not allowed to publish without permission of UvA
(www.nationaalherbarium.nl/virtual/copyrights.htm).
Centraal Bureau voor Schimmelcultures
(www.cbs.knaw.nl/disclaimer/index.htm)
GBIF Data Sharing Agreement
• Universally available to all users (incl. commercial users?)
• Ownership remains with data providers
providers can stop providing data any moment
• Each record provided with Globally Unique Identifier
• Restriction of access to sensitive data (endangered species)
responsibility lies with Data Providers
GBIF Principles on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Data Use
GBIF encourages free dissemination of biodiversity data
• without Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)
• respect conditions set by data providers
• no limitations on further non-commercial use
Users -> respect restriction of access to sensitive data
-> publicly acknowledge source of data
NLBIF criteria for funding projects:
• Fit within objectives of NLBIF
• ICT work to publish digitised data on-line and connect to GBIF
• Preferably in cooperation with ETI
