Community Members: A Health/Wellness Opportunity Our district is offering a Health Screening to staff and community members. The Health Assessment and Screening will be held in the concourse on Tuesday, January 11 and Thursday, January 13 from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. Times are being scheduled now. If you choose to participate, please call the school at 347-5215 and speak with Kay Vaughn who can help you with this process. For non-staff members, the cost of the Health Screening is $50 a person. The following is included in the Health and Assessment Screening: Blood Profile (venous draw from arm) :Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, Triglycerides, Cholesterol/HDL ratio, Glucose, Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, CO2, BUN, Creatinine, Uric Acid, Total Protein, Albumen, Globulin, A/G Ratio, Total bili, Calcium, Phosphorus, Iron, LDH, AST/SGOT, ALT, Alk Phos, GGTP; 2) Blood Pressure and Resting Heart Rate; 3) Waist / Hip Circumference; 4) Body Composition measures: weight, body mass index (BMI), body fat %, pounds of body fat, body water and lean tissue, basal metabolic rate and recommended values; and 5) One-on-One Consultation regarding all results, except the Blood Profile. Each person who participates will receive the blood profile results within a few weeks of the screening. The blood profile results will be put into individual confidential envelopes and mailed to your home for distribution. Confidentiality: Your Confidentiality will be respected. Your information is only shared with you and stays with Iowa Health-Des Moines Wellness Services. In preparation for the Health Screening: About a week prior to the Health Screening, those who sign up will receive the screening guidelines (12 hour fasting, etc.). In addition to those tests listed above: You may wish to have additional tests; these are listed below. The cost listed has been discounted $5.00 each for East Union. If you wish any of these tests, you simply need to let the health assistant know at the time when you are scheduled for the screening. Hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) $17.00 Indicates how well you have controlled your diabetes over the past 2-3 months. A1C gives a picture of the average amount of glucose in the blood over that time period. Highly sensitive C-Reactive Protein $27.00 CRP is an inflammatory marker. CRP is widely reported as a possible key indicator of heart health & may help physicians predict a patient’s long-term risk of a cardiovascular event. Do not participate if you have tissue injury, infection or general inflammation. Individuals with Arthritis should not have this measured. Liver Function (ALT & AST) $10.00 Sensitive indicators of liver damage from different types of disease & from medications, such as cholesterol-lowering drugs. Cardiovascular drugs, anti- seizure medications, pain relief medications, antibiotics, and anti-depressant drugs. Tests are repeated 2 to 12 times per year based on the medications currently prescribed by your doctor. PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) $27.00 Helps detect prostate cancer. Approved along with a digital rectal exam in men age 50 and older. CBC (Complete Blood Count) $13.00 The CBC is a group of tests used to screen for a wide variety of diseases. WBC (white blood cells), RBC (red blood cells), Hgb (hemoglobin), Hct (Hematocrit), Platelets, MCV (mean cell volume), MCHC (mean cell hemoglobin concentration), Neutrophils, Lymphocytes, Monocytes, Eosinphils and Basophils. TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone) & Free T4 $27.00 Used to screen adults for thyroid disorders. T4 aids in the diagnosis of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) $27.00 Used to help women determine if they are in menopause or have gone through menopause. For women age 45 and older, Women who have had a hysterectomy and did not have their ovaries removed, Women who are experiencing changes in their normal cycle, are having irregular cycles, or are experiencing hot flashes. This test is not valid if on any form of estrogen or progesterone. Vitamin D - 25 Hydroxy $33.00 Vitamin D is synthesized in the skin in response to sunlight. The best nutrition sources of D are oily fish primarily salmon and mackerel, some vegetables, yeast and fungi. Vitamin D is converted to 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the liver. The measurement of 25OH vitamin D concentration in the serum or plasma is the best indicator of vitamin D nutritional status. Vitamin D deficiency is commonly treated with vitamin D2 or D3 medications, fortified foods or nutrition supplements.
