Classroom Atmosphere: In order to create an optimum learning environment,
there must be mutual respect for everyone in the class. I expect each and every
one of you to make learning in this class a priority and come to class willing to
learn. While I am here to teach you, support you and challenge your minds, the
amount of success you have in this class will be related to the effort you put in.
There are absolutely no cell phones allowed while I am teaching!
Academic Expectations: Come to class daily and on time, Be prepared, Be
respectful, Participate and Try
Materials: Students are expected to bring the following to class everyday unless
otherwise directed:
 3 -ring binder that is only used for math with lined and graph paper (all
drawings, constructions, and graphs must be on graph paper),
 Pencil (must be used for all assignments, tests and quizzes- no
exceptions)
 Geometry textbook
 Calculator
Homework: Homework is essential for individual practice and to further one
understands of geometrical concepts. This may be work from the book and/or
worksheets. The majority of the time, you will have time to start this in class. We
will review homework daily after the warm-up.
Things to remember when completing your homework…
Completeness – Is every assigned problem completed?
Neatness – Is the assignment legible and organized?
Correctness – Are the answers reasonable and correct
Weekly warm-up sheets: There will be warm-up problems on the board to be
completed at the beginning of each class done on warm-up sheets. These will
be collected at the end of each week.
Homework Quizzes :(may or may not be done) There will be 1-2 problems
daily that will come from the homework that was assigned the night before. If
you do your homework, you should have no problem with the quiz. Ask
questions at the beginning of the hour if you do not understand. You will be
allowed to use your homework on your quiz. At times, we may check some of the
homework prior to taking the quiz. If we do this, it is okay to change your
answers with a colored pencil or pen. The goal is to check for understanding of
geometrical concepts. If you are absent for a homework quiz, your homework will
count for your quiz score)
Tests: There will be tests during the trimester to evaluate what is being learned
daily and to check for understanding. Students can re-take tests to improve
grades but must set up arrangements with me at least one day prior to test retake. They must all complete review for test. There will be a final at the
completion of the trimester.
Make-Up & Late Work: All late and make up should be completed within a week
to prevent students from falling behind and will receive half credit for late work.
Geometry concepts build upon each other and it is difficult to keep up if you are
behind in your work.
Grading: Students will be evaluated on warm ups, daily quizzes, tests, and
participation.
Participation: 2 points (1 point for being ready when the bell rings and starting
the warm up, 1 point for class discussions and for working on class
work/homework during class)
Homework: 3 points but points may vary

Course Outcomes:
Tools of Geometry:
Students are introduced to the basic elements of geometry: points, lines, planes, segments, and angles.
They are also shown reasoning skills, which they will use throughout the course, specifically making
predictions and conjectures based on patterns they observe. Student s will sketch points, lines, planes,
and their intersections. They will measure segments and add their lengths. Finally, they will measure
angles and classify them based on their measurements.
Reasoning and Proof:
Students will learn how to write special types of statements known as conditionals, biconditionals and
definitions. You will use such statements and deductive reasoning to conclude that other statements are
true. They will understand how deductive reasoning works and begin to study proofs.
Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
Students will study the angles formed when two lines are cut by a third line, called a transversal. Students
will identify relationships between the angles formed by two lines and a transversal, especially when the
two lines are parallel. They will use the properties of parallel and perpendicular lines to find angle
measurements, Students will identify the angle relationships necessary to show two lines are parallel.
Finally they will also explore translations.
Congruent Triangles
Students will learn to show that two triangles are congruent. The properties of congruent triangles will be
explored. An examination of angle bisectors and perpendicular bisectors leads to discussion of reflection
and symmetry. Students will identify corresponding parts of congruent triangles. They will show that
triangles are congruent using the SSS, SAS, and ASA Congruence Postulates as well as the AAS and HL
Congruence Theorems. Students will use angle bisectors and perpendicular bisectors to compute angle
measures and segment lengths in situations involving triangles. They will reflect figures over lines and
use reflections to discover lines of symmetry in a figure.
Quadrilaterals
Students will identify and classify polygons based on their properties. Students will also examine the
properties of quadrilaterals. They will find angle measures of quadrilaterals and identify special
quadrilaterals. Using the properties of parallelograms, rhombuses, rectangles, squares, and trapezoids
students will find their side lengths and angle measures.
Similarity
After studying ratios and proportions, students will use them in connection with similar polygons. Students
will identify similar polygons and use postulates and theorems to show that two triangles are similar.
Students will also work with dilations of polygons.
Right Triangles and Trigonometry
Students will be reintroduced to square roots. Students will investigate the relationships of special right
triangles. They will examine and use three trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, and tangent) to solve right
triangles.
Transformations:
Students will learn how to use transformations known as reflections, translations, and rotations to create a
congruent image of a given shape. You will learn to use transformations for relating two given congruent
shapes to each other. You will learn the effects of applying two transformations, one after the other.
Area:
Students will learn how finding the area of a rectangle can help you find the areas of parallelograms and
triangles. You will learn how to find the areas of special quadrilaterals and regular polygons. You will
learn how perimeters and areas of similar figures are related and learn how to find measurement of parts
of a circle.
