Bayou View Middle School – Weekly Lesson Plans Teacher: Lee/Wallace Essential Question: Class Periods: Advanced Week of: February 6, 2017 Subject: 6th Science Volcanoes and Earthquakes What processes are continuously changing the Earth? Lesson Plans Subject to change due to needs of students Classroom News/Due Dates: HOMEWORK: Article of the Week 3.5 Mixed Practice TEST 3.2 Wednesday 8.4b Describe the cause and effect relationship between the composition of and movement within the Earth’s lithosphere. a. Seismic wave velocities of earthquakes and volcanoes to lithospheric plate boundaries using seismic data b. Volcanoes formed at mid-ocean ridges, within intra-plate regions, at island arcs, and along some continental edges c. Modern distribution of continents to the movement of lithospheric plates since the formation of Pangaea Day/Date Bell Schedule Monday Bell Work Students will read AOTW 2.-6-17 Regular Schedule Tuesday 2-7-17 Regular Schedule Students will read about explosive and nonexplosive volcanoes students will complete a double bubble map Procedures Objectives TI = Teacher Input, M = Modeling, GP = Guided Practice, IP = Independent Practice TTW = “The teacher will…” TSW = “The students will…” (“The student will…”) Assessment Observation, Activotes Project, Quiz, Unit Test, DCA, etc. ANTICIPATORY SET: DYNAMIC EARTH Students will http://www.learner.org/interactives/dynamicearth/plate.html interpret Target Question: How can you create a model of the data divergent boundary? collected Students will complete analysis of Colliding Plates from colliding Students will follow a recipe to create play dough that plates will be used in Tuesdays activity Students will create a shield volcano using play dough. ANTICIPATORY SET: Lava Flows in Pahoa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddzU-rkzKF0 Ontake https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQtkoLxqUNQ Target Question: How is a shield volcano created? The students will watch videos on an explosive and nonexplosive volcano and list characteristics of each to compare and contrast Inquiry: Students will use the play dough to create a shield volcano. Students will mix baking soda and vinegar, they will trace the flow of reaction. Students will place play dough where the flow of reaction occurred Students will repeat at least 4x to build a shield volcano Students will complete lab questions for Lights, Camara, Action Making volcanoes Teacher observation Student map Students will be assessed by questions throughout the activity as the teacher circulates among students. Closure How could you change this lab to demonstrat e another type of boundary?. How is a shield volcano created? Wednesday 2-8-17 MPT 3.2 Regular schedule Thursday 2-9-17 Regular Schedule i-Ready Math Friday 2-10-17 regular Schedule List 3 things you know about earthquakes. List 2 things you want to learn. The student will be assessed on the development of plate tectonic theory (Continental drift and SeaFloor spreading), plate boundary interactions Students will use problem solving skills to complete mathematical concepts. Students will use models to describe the different types of faults. ANTICIPATORY SET: TEST DIRECTIONS Target Question: MPT TEST 3.2 ANTICIPATORY SET : • Target Question: i-Ready Math ANTICIPATORY SET: types of faults https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFi8pVLpJjE Target Question: Formal assessment What are the types of faults? Students will use models to demonstrate fault movement Students will participate in class discussion about earthquakes Student will conduct an inquiry activity using fault models, students will work independently in lab by following directions. •Teacher observation Students will be assessed by informal questions throughout lab activity and lab report Students will read when complete with test i-Ready Math Draw a sketch of a normal fault and reverse fault
