The Incredible Cell Project
You will be required to construct a model of a plant OR animal cell. Your project must be
labeled. You may label each organelle or create a key. Use the questions in the grading section to
help you develop a good project.
Grading:
Grades will be based on the following questions:









Is your name on the front of the project?
Is the cell type identified? Tell if it is a plant or animal cell.
Is the model a 3-D representation of a plant or animal cell?
Are all the organelles included? (10 for plants cells, 9 for animal cells)
Your organelles should clearly represent the actual organelle. By just looking at an organelle I
should be able to tell what it is. Ex: Your nucleus should not be square. Your mitochondria
should have a folded inner membrane, etc.….
Are the organelles correctly labeled? Each organelle must be labeled with its
name and function. (Suggestion: use toothpicks and pieces of paper to make little flags.)
Are the relationships between the parts (if any) shown correctly? Are the ribosomes on the
endoplasmic reticulum? Is the endoplasmic reticulum near the nucleus? If a plant cell, are the
chloroplasts around the vacuole?
Are the materials used creative?
Be unique and creative! Use a variety of appropriate materials.
Organelles that MUST be included:
Animal Cell
1. Cell Membrane
2. Cytoplasm
3. Nucleus
4. Endoplasmic Reticulum
5. Ribosomes
6. Golgi Body
7. Vacuole(s)
8. Mitochondria
9. Lysosomes
Plant Cell
1. Cell Wall
2. Cell Membrane
3. Cytoplasm
4. Nucleus
5. Endoplasmic Reticulum
6. Ribosomes
7. Golgi Body
8. Vacuole(s)
9. Chloroplast
10. Mitochondria
11. Lysosomes
Cell Model Grading Rubric
Appearance and
Creativity x2
Excellent (4)
Satisfactory (3)
Needs
Improvement (2)
Project stands out
and shows evidence
of considerable effort.
Appearance is neat,
labels are typed or
neatly written, project
is organized, and
shows evidence of
good effort.
Labels are hard to
read, project is not
neatly done, more
effort was required or
needed.
Cell model uses
materials not often
seen in most projects.
All organelles & cell
parts are accurately
detailed and clearly
represented. Actual
numbers of organelles
are represented.
Detail of Cell and
Cell Structures x3
Proper size, shape
and placement in the
cell.
Cell model clearly
represents either an
animal or a plant cell
Good, creative use of
materials that are
often used by other
students
Most organelles & cell
parts are accurately
detailed and clearly
recognizable. Actual
numbers of organelles
are represented.
Missing,
misplacement,
improper size or
shape of one or 2
organelles in cell.
Including an extra
organelle.
Cell model represents
a plant or animal cell.
Labeled Organelles
and Functions of
Organelles (on back
of label) x2
All organelles are
correctly located and
labeled on the model.
Most organelles are
correctly located and
labeled on the model.
Functions of all
organelles are
correctly described in
detail.
Functions of all
organelles are
correctly summarized
Limited creativity is
used
More detail needed to
recognize cell parts.
Some are not
recognizable.
Numbers of
organelles are
somewhat
representative of an
actual cell.
Missing three or more
organelles. Most
organelles proper
shape, size and
placement.
Model is a replica of a
generalized cell.
Some organelles are
correctly located and
labeled on the model.
Functions of
most/some organelles
are summarized with
minor errors.
Unacceptable (1)
Appears hastily built,
lack of effort is
evident.
Lacks creativity,
project is a poster or
other 2-D model.
Parts of cell are
generalized “blobs” of
color.
Numbers of
organelles are NOT
representative of an
actual cell.
Missing three or more
organelles. Most
organelles not proper
shape, size or
placement in the cell.
Model fails to clearly
represent a cell, plant
or animal
Very few organelles
are labeled OR there
are errors with
organelles identified.
Functions are not
clearly explained or
contain numerous
errors.
