FRAME THE LESSON TEACHER : 6th CLASS: Math LESSON DATE: 4th 6 week (week 4) Feb. 15-19 (week 23) Teaching Points & Activities (***Disclaimer: Students do not need to learn how to solve for area of a rhombus.) Student Expectations Bundled in Lesson Noun=Underline Verb=Italicize 6.8(A) Extend previous knowledge of triangles and their properties to include the sum of angles of a triangle, the relationship between the lengths of sides and measures of angles in a triangle, and determining when three lengths form a triangle 6.8D- Determine solutions for problems involving the area of shapes and prisms where dimensions are positive rational numbers. 6.8B- Model area formals for parallelograms trapezoids, and triangles by decomposing and rearranging part of these shapes. Engage: Explore: Explain: Elaborate: 6.8c-write equations that represent problems related to the area of rectangles where dimensions are positive rational numbers. Evaluate: Objective/Key Understanding: 6.8(A) SWBAT extend previous knowledge of triangles and their properties to include the sum of angles of a triangle, the relationship between the lengths of sides and measures of angles in a triangle, and determining when three lengths form a triangle extend previous knowledge of triangles and their properties to the relationship between the lengths of sides and measures of angles in a triangle. 6.8D-SWBAT determine solutions for problems involving the area of shapes where dimensions are positive rational numbers. 6.8B- SWBAT model area formals for parallelograms trapezoids, and triangles by decomposing and rearranging part of these shapes. Closing Product/ Question/ Informal Assessment: M T W TH F Resources/Materials: Engage: DAY 1 POP QUIZ! Give student Module 15 Mixed Review Test Prep pg 442. SW independently complete the Are you Ready pg. 444. Show Real-world video to preview the lesson. SW work in pair to complete the Reading Start up pg. 445 and read pg. 446. Pull small groups who did not master the quiz. All other SW will play vocabulary Taboo game in partners when finished. Student will draw a card with vocabulary words previously learned plus all polygons and types of triangles. SW describe the word without saying the word while partner tries to guess. TW create mini quiz with vocabulary and 6.8A to assess knowledge of polygons at the end of class. Engage: Area VS Perimeter. SW work in groups to create a T-Chart that lists definitions, key words, and pictures to represent Area and perimeter. How do you find the area of a rectangle? Brainpop video area of polygons-https://www.brainpop.com/math/geometryandmeasurement/areaofpolygons/ Do you know how to change a rectangle into two identical right triangles? Explore: 16.1 Explore Activity Area of a parallelogram and Trapezoid. Explore 16.2 Area of triangle Explain: TW explain how important it is to looks at the reference chart to locate the formulas; students must write formula first and then plug in dimensions underneath. SW discover the need to use the proper order of operations when solving. SW tri-fold a foldable with rectangle, parallelogram, trapezoid. Include: definitions, pictures, and formulas. Be sure students are using the STAAR Reference chart. Interactive whiteboard for examples Reteach how to multiply with decimals and fractions when needed. Elaborate: Guided practice ( May omit Rhombus!) 16.1—16.2 and Independent practice. Extra practice: http://www.kutasoftware.com/FreeWorksheets/PreAlgWorksheets/Area%20of%20Squares,%20Rectangles,%20a nd%20Parallelograms.pdf https://www.mathworksheetsland.com/topics/geometry/areaandperi/ip.pdf Evaluate:16.1 and 16.2 Lesson Quiz Go math Online. TW create Exit tickets for other days this week. Create Area quiz with quadrilaterals and triangles. Stop & Check for Understanding—High Level Questions How do you find the height of a trapezoid? Go Math Module 16 Critical Writing Prompt: How can you find the areas of a parallelogram and trapezoid? How can you tell that a quadrilateral is a trapezoid rather than a parallelogram? How do you find the area of a trapezoid? How do you find the area of a triangle? Small Group Purposeful Talk Question Stems: How are the area of a trapezoid and the area of a parallelogram? What is the relationship between the rectangle, trapezoid, and the parallelogram? What does it mean in a formula when the variables are next to each other without and operation? Module 15 Mixed Review Test Prep pg 442 What is the relationship between the area of a triangle and a rectangle/parallelogram? Module 16.1 and 16.2 Quizzes online Why is area expressed in square units? Vocabulary: Polygons: triangles, trapezoid, parallelogram. Area, perimeter, formulas, variables Rigor & Relevance: (Real World Connection) Module 16 Real –World Video: Quilting, painting, and other art forms use familiar geometric shapes, such as triangles and rectangles to buy enough supplies for a project, you need to find or estimate the areas of each shape in the project. Can you Identify the geometric shapes in the problems, then use their dimensions to find the area and volume of the shapes?
