Venkata Subba Rao Atluri, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Center of Personalized Nanomedicine
Institute for NeuroImmune Pharmacology
Email: [email protected]
Dr. Atluri received his Ph.D. (Medical Microbiology) from Postgraduate Institute of
Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India. Presently, he is a faculty at the
Centre for Personalized Nanomedicine, Institute of NeuroImmune Pharmacology,
Department of Immunology of Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, Florida International University (FIU),
Miami, Florida, USA. For the first time, Dr. Atluri has reported the dysregulation of synaptic plasticity genes and
spine density in HIV exposed neuronal cells and reported the usefulness of vorinostat as a therapeutic agent to
inhibit the negative regulatory effects on synaptic plasticity in HIV infection. His group has developed magnetic
nanoparticle based drug delivery system to deliver neuroprotective agents, anti-HIV and latency breaking agents
across the blood brain barrier for sustained release. He has also been serving as an Editorial Board member of
Scientific Reports, Frontiers in Virology, AIDS and Behavior, International Journal of Nanomedicine,
Neuropsychiatric disease and treatment, HIV/AIDS-Research and Palliative Care etc.; and reviewer of many peerreviewed scientific journals.
Research Interests:
 Identification of neuroprotective agents and Anti-HIV drugs to deliver across the blood-brain barrier (BBB)
using nano-carrier based approaches for the treatment of Neuro-AIDS.
 Exploring the neuropathogenic mechanisms of HIV infection and drugs of abuse (Cocaine, Methamphetamine,
Morphine etc.).
 Studying the epigenetic regulation of synaptic plasticity in HIV infected drug abusers.
 Studying the role of innate immune system especially, inflammasomes activation in the development of NeuroAIDS.
