IN READING MAMMOGRAMS, MORE IS BETTER
Radiologists who read a higher volume of mammograms find more cancers than radiologists who read a
low volume of mammograms. (Journal of the National Cancer Institute) The population of women screened
also influences accuracy. For instance, accuracy is more likely if menstruating women have a mammogram
during the first or second week of the menstrual cycle, when breast tissue is less dense. Finally, women are
more likely to get accurate mammogram readings if they go to the same facility and/or ensure that prior
films are available for the radiologist to compare.
Search for a Certified Mammography Facility
http://www.fda.gov/radiation-emittingproducts/mammographyqualitystandardsactandprogram/consumerinformation/ucm113962.htm
The facility must have certificates on display to show that they are accredited by the American College of
Radiology (ACR) and certified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct mammography.
This list of FDA Certified Mammography Facilities is updated weekly.
If you click on Search for MQSA Certified Mammography Facilities in Your Area, you can access a listing
by zip code of all mammography facilities in that zip code certified by the Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) or Certifying State as meeting baseline quality standards for equipment, personnel and practices
under the Mammography Quality Standards Act of 1992 (MQSA) and subsequent Mammography Quality
Standards Reauthorization Act (MQSRA) amendments.
