Strain energy is an important energy stored in elastic objects when they deform due to external forces.
This energy can be converted into mechanical energy and used to elastically restore an object to it’s
original shape and orientation when the force is removed.
Similarly, strain energy is stored within plant cell walls and tissues. Most plant cells are surrounded by
a rigid cell wall composed of many cellulose microfibrils. They provide elastic support, which allow the
plant to sway in the wind without breaking.
Inspired by this phenomenon, stretchy cords are used to create a visually interesting abstract displays
to represent the structure of cellulose in plants. At the same time, it engages visitors to interact and
stimulate imaginary patterns.
Red elastic cords are fixed to the post on one side, visitors simply need to stretch and attach the other
end into any hooks on the opposite side post. Since the space between might be difficult to navigate,
visitors have to bend, stretch or step over cords to move through. It is an interactive artwork to
encourage creativity and imagination of visitors
