CURRICULUM VITAE SAVITRI W. SINGH RN MSN 4382 Puget Drive Vancouver, BC, Canada V6L-2V8 Home: 604-732-8649 Pager: 604-570-5609 E-mail: [email protected] -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------OBJECTIVES 1. To pursue a PhD studies in Nursing Sciences related to culture and health. The focus of my proposed PhD research will be on the meanings of social support (network): “South Asian women’s perceptions and meanings of social support whilst facing the challenges of living with cancer”. Health care professionals communicate necessary disease related physiological information to families and clients, but to what extent do clients’ understand disease process. Who do they seek support from when making tough health care decisions about their lives? How does the discourse surrounding cancer affect the decisions that are made by the client and the family? How do contextual factors such as family structuring, social, political, class, individual, and structural dominance interplay for women from diverse cultural backgrounds when processing information related to their illness “cancer”? 2. My long-term career goal is to be a researcher and an educator with the World Health Organization, a university or a healthcare agency. My research interests are related to the complexities of culture and health for those individuals who are accessing as well as delivering health care. 3. Learning is a life-long process. Reciprocal teaching and learning can be a challenge at any stage of life; an academic arena; or at a lay level. Thus, I believe as a researcher, a health care provider, and an educator, we have the responsibility to share what we have learned through research with the communities and individuals who have shared their life experiences with us. We can help strengthen and build communities from within, with collaborative teaching and learning through sharing knowledge that individuals have painstakingly shared with us in the name of research and advancement. Singh 5 Self-directed studies May 1998-May1999: Bachelor of Nursing program. (Independently collected data from South Asian women about their experiences related to accessing Pap smears. Transcribed, coded and analyzed the data with Dr. Bottorff’s guidance. My assignments included two reports of the literature search and the findings in the form of formal papers. My exposure to research during my bachelor’s led me to concentrate on cervical and breast cancer screening practices of South Asian women with Dr. Joan Bottorff. Dr. Johnson's project on nicotine addiction has exposed me to understand the concept of lay theories and to work with adolescents’. In the project with Dr. Joan Anderson, we looked at ethno-cultural populations’ help seeking experiences in the hospital. This created a very interesting learning environment for me in methodologies as well as intense data analysis in qualitative research. These experiences have been invaluable in helping guide me in my master’s thesis research and will be an asset during my dissertation and future research in health care. My experiences with the cancer agency has given me the opportunity to put together effective surveys and to work on quantitative data analysis using the SPSS program and further to prepare structured reports for administration. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------PUBLICATIONS Published Reimer Kirkham, Sheryl, et. al.
