Division: Health Careers Department: Allied Health & Human Services Subject Code: RADT Course #: 282 Course Title: Computer Tomography Physics, Instrumentation, and Imaging HARRISBURG AREA COMMUNITY COLLEGE FORM 335 Course Form 335 must be updated at least every five years per AP 765 to include, at a minimum, the following elements. [§335.2] 1. Digital Description (Insert new/revised digital description below): Credit hours: Lecture hours: Lab hours: 3.0 3.0 0.0 BL: [ ]⅓ [ ]½ [ ]⅔ [ ] Other (Indicate fraction or percent) 2. Catalog Description (Insert new/revised description below): This course is one of four didactic courses designed for the Radiologic Technologists Registered (or registry eligible new graduates) in Radiography through the ARRT. This course is designed for the Technologist who is seeking one of the following: post primary certification in Computer Tomography (CT) through the ARRT, employment as a CT technologist, or ARRT category A continuing education credits. The content is designed to impart an understanding of the physical principles and instrumentation involved in computed tomography. 3. Prerequisites: Minimum Grade Required Corequisites: Other: Must be eligible to take the certification exam, or be currently registered in radiography, through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. 4. Learning Outcomes [These outcomes are necessary to enable students to attain the essential knowledge and skills embodied in the program’s educational objectives.] Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to: Describe events leading to the discovery of computed tomography and its evolution Describe the components of the CT imaging system Explain the functions & types of collimators & detectors used in CT systems Define linear attenuation coefficient, algorithm, and filter Define and describe the functions of the data acquisition system (DAS) & CT computer system Explain the difference between reconstructing and reformatting an image 12/1/04 Form Template Reviewed & Updated: 10/26/07; 1/11/08; 1/16/09; 7/14/09; 7/31/12 1 Division: Health Careers Department: Allied Health & Human Services Subject Code: RADT Course #: 282 Course Title: Computer Tomography Physics, Instrumentation, and Imaging Define and explain the correlation between CT and each of the following: Pixel Matrix Voxel Pitch X, y, z coordinates Scan field of view (sfov) Display field of view (dfov) CT/Hounsfield number Partial volume averaging Window width (ww), window level (wl) Spatial resolution Contrast resolution Noise Aliasing Digital imaging Annotation Scanogram/scout/pilot/topogram/survey Region of interest (ROI) Conventional (slice-by-slice) vs. volumetric data acquisition Half-scan, full-scan, overscan Interscan delay Rays and views Sampling (angular and ray) Name the factors affecting image quality in CT to include artifacts Name and list the characteristics of the two types of "slip-rings" used in spiral CT scanners Name the radiation protection devices that may be used to reduce patient dose in CT and describe the correct application of each 5.
