Visual
Create an 8 1/2” x 11” no larger, that shows about your myth. It can be a main character or
an important scene. You can draw, or you can create a collage of pictures from magazines or
the internet. Be sure to include the title of your myth and a caption that explains your
creation. This scrapbook page, along with a final draft of your myth summary, will be
compiled into class mythology scrapbooks.
Partner guidelines.
You want to divide the work evenly!!! It is up to you and your partners to find time to work
outside of class. It may be at recess or at lunch… what about after school in the homework
club? In the past, some students decided to meet at each other’s house to put the finishing
touches on their project. Do not commit to working at home if you know your family’s
schedule is too busy!
AS A GROUP, YOU WILL KNOW YOU ARE READY WHEN YOU HAVE:
A final draft of the summary page
1 scrapbook picture page
Answers for Cloze activity
PLEASE E-MAIL YOUR POWER POINT TO ME THE NIGHT BEFORE SO I CAN HAVE IT
READY ON THE PROPER COMPUTER TO PRESENT ON THE SMARTBOARD.

Summary of The Story of Athena and Arachne
The story of Athena, began when Zeus chased Metis, a beautiful Titan, and she became
pregnant with his child. He was warned, however, that if the son was a boy, it would depose Zeus
the same way as Zeus had overthrown his father, Cronos. To avoid being deposed, Zeus
swallowed Metis the next time he saw her! Months later, Zeus came down with a terrible
headache, and Hephaestus had to use a hammer to break it open. Out sprang Athena, a tall
maiden with armor, holding a long spear.
Because she had been born from Zeus’s head, Athena became the goddess of wisdom and
intellectual activities. She taught men the science of numbers and tools, and she taught women
to weave. She was also the mistress of strategy, and before battles leaders would pray to her.
Before trials, judges would pray to her as well.
Once, a proud girl named Arachne boasted that she was the greatest weaver in the world.
Athena was furious—SHE was supposed to be the goddess of weaving! Athena challenged
Arachne to a weaving competition; if Arachne lost, she would be killed. During the competition,
both women wove amazing tapestries. Arachne’s tapestry showed scenes of love and joy, but
Athena wove scenes of terrible things to come. The crowd wept when it saw Athena’s tapestry.
When Arachne saw their reaction, she hung herself. Athena decided to turn her into a spider,
who would weave through eternity.
A lesson that Athena wanted Arachne to learn was about pride: humans should work and
try hard, but they should never challenge the gods. This myth also shows, however, the way that
the Greek Gods and goddesses had a lot of human characteristics, like jealousy and rage!
