Greek Mythology and
Greek Life
"Myth has two main functions," the poet and scholar
Robert Graves wrote in 1955. “The first is to answer the
sort of awkward questions that children ask, such as
‘Who made the world? How will it end? Who was the first
man? Where do souls go after death?’…The second
function of myth is to justify an existing social system
and account for traditional rites and customs
In ancient Greece, stories about gods and goddesses
and heroes and monsters were an important part of
everyday life. They explained everything from religious
rituals to the weather, and they gave meaning to the
world people saw around them.
Your Greek Mythology
Project
You will write a 1-2 page Greek Myth inspired story.
HOWEVER, it is set in 2013! You are going to apply the
themes of a myth (that you learned in Language Arts) and
write a myth that would explain a cultural experience that
we have today.
You will choose to focus on:
*explaining a natural phenomenon
* Teaching a moral (lesson)
*Writing an adventure using an extreme display of emotion
(love, envy, fear, jealousy)
Follow rubric and components discussed in Language
Arts for expectations
DUE: FEB. 14/15th (NEXT THURSDAY /FRIDAY!!)
Brainstorm Sheet
Explanation
This is your opportunity to use what you wrote and we discussed
about in the beginning of class in relation to YOUR CULTURE to
figure out what you will write about in your Greek Myth
Fill in the shapes with your ideas (can be bulleted). This is for you
but will be checked for HW.
On the right hand side, you only have to pick ONE shape to fill in.
Your story only NEEDS to focus on ONE of these experiences.
If you want to do more to challenge yourself, then AWESOME. YOU
WILL GET MORE POINTS ON RUBRIC FOR INCLUDING MORE
THAN ONE. 
