Helen, the queen of Sparta, is said to have been the most beautiful woman of all
time. Her beauty even led to the Trojan War, the greatest war in Greek mythology.
According to some stories, Helen was the daughter of the Greek god Zeus. When
it was time for her to get married, men from all over the land came with expensive
gifts to try to win her love. Menelaus, the king of Sparta, was the man whom she
finally got married to.
Years later, a Trojan prince named Paris helped Aphrodite win a beauty contest.
To pay him back for his help, Aphrodite promised Paris that she would make Helen
fall in love with him. Paris then traveled to Sparta, and he then took Helen back to
Troy.
When Menelaus learned what had happened, he called on all of his friends to
help him get his wife back by going to war with Troy. The war lasted for almost ten
years before the Spartans were able to take control of Troy and burned down the city.
Menelaus had planned to kill Helen when she was finally returned to him. When he
saw her, however, he melted because of her beauty. He was unable to kill her.
Instead, he took her back to Sparta to be his wife again.
