CSP Mini-Lesson 3, Spring 2008 Mini-Lesson Standards: (1) Identify skills and education related to specific careers; (2) Use tools and devices appropriate to a career; (3) Describe the basic structure and functions of the human body systems; (3) Follow instructions and procedures carefully; (4) Work with people effectively. Mini-Lesson Correlations: Career education, biology, communication Nurse, please help me As a licensed practical nurse, you provide bedside care to patients and take vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure and pulse. You give injections, apply dressings, insert catheters, and observe and report on patients’ medical status. Depending on state law, you may also administer medications and start intravenous fluids. You work with patients, families, and other medical professionals, which require you to follow instructions and maintain a caring and sympathetic nature. What skills and personal qualities do you believe you will need in order to be a successful nurse? Match each of the following devices with its use. ___ Sphygmomanometer a. Measures blood pressure ___ Stethoscope b. Measures temperature ___ Thermometer c. Assesses the heart and lungs ___ Percussion hammer d. Measures reflexes Imagine that you need to take a patient’s carotid pulse rate. You know that the radial artery runs down the arm and the carotid artery runs from the brain to the heart. Where would you place your fingers to take the carotid pulse? a) On the patient’s neck b) On the patient’s elbow c) On the patient’s wrist d) Behind the patient’s knee e) On the patient’s hip Answer: _____________________________________________________ Copyright © 2006 Career Solutions Publishing www.careersolutionspublishing.com Page 2 of 7 Nurse, please help me (Continued) Understanding how the human body functions is essential for a nurse. Humans have 12 pairs of cranial nerves. Study the list below of the 12 pairs of cranial nerves and their functions. Then answer the question that follows. Cranial Nerve Function 1. Olfactory Controls smell 2. Optic Controls vision 3. Oculomotor Controls movement of some eye muscles 4. Trochelar Controls movement of one eye muscle 5. Trigeminal Controls sensation in the face and scalp and controls chewing muscles 6. Abducens Controls movement of one eye muscle 7. Facial Controls taste and the muscles used for facial expression 8. Acoustic Controls hearing and balance 9. Glossopharyngeal Controls sensation to the tongue and the muscles used for swallowing 10. Vagus Controls the larynx and organs in the chest and abdomen 11. Controls two neck muscles Spinal accessory 12. Hypoglossal Controls the tongue muscles Copyright © 2006 Career Solutions Publishing www.careersolutionspublishing.com Page 3 of 7 Nurse, please help me (Continued) For each of the nerves listed below, write at least two actions that a human would experience difficulty doing if the nerve were damaged. To become a licensed nurse requires a substantial number of biology classes, both in high school and in college. Additionally, nursing programs at the college level include supervised patient care and classroom courses in first aid, nutrition, and anatomy and physiology. Before becoming a licensed nurse, one must pass a state licensing examination. The expected salary range for a recent graduate from a nursing program is $25,000 to $75,000. To expand this lesson, pair students and ask them to locate their partner’s carotid artery. This artery is to the left and right side of the windpipe. (If touching activities are forbidden in your school district, go to the next expanded activity.) To expand this lesson further, ask students to write at least two actions that a human would experience difficulty doing if the remaining eight cranial nerves from the list were damaged. They may use the Web site below to help them with their answers.
