Computer Literacy Vocabulary
input device – a outer parts of a computer used to enter data for processing ex. keyboard, mouse
output device – used to communicate the results of data processing carried out by an information
processing system, which changes it into accessible information
storage – storing for future use
motherboard – a printed circuit board tat ties all parts of a computer together
hard disk drive – stores and retrieves all data using rotating disks
RAM (Random Access Memory) – memory that is to be accessed and stored temporarily (helps read
data faster)
*peripheral – operates as a magnetic disk but is connected to the CPU
bus – transfers data between components inside a computer, or between computers
expansion card – a circuit board that allows for more memory
power supply unit (PSU) – supplies power to a unit
optical disk drive – a component that allows to see what ever CD that is put into the drive
central processing unit (CPU) – the area of a computer that executes most of the commands from the
computer's hardware and software
software – programs and operating systems used on a computer
operating system (OS) – software that manages computer hardware and software and provides useful
things that a computer can do
driver – tells software how to communicate with a piece of hardware
program – a series of instructions that allow a computer to perform a specific task
bootstrapping – loading a set of instructions when a computer is first turned on
BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) – a set of computer in firmware that control input and output
operations
command line – all text display mode that allows you to communicate with the computer through input
and output
algorithm – a set of rules to be followed in calculations
analog – device or process which data is represented by physical properties
app – a program or software designed for a particular purpose
application – software that runs on your computer
array – a data structure that contains a group of elements
backup – a copy of a file on a separate storage device
bandwidth – maximum data transfer rate of a network
binary – numeric system that uses two digits
bit – smallest unit of measurement in computer data
bitmap – digital image composed of a matrix of dots
byte – unit of measurement used to measure data
blog (web log) – list of journal entries posted on a web page
blogger – one who writes on a blog
bookmark – saved shortcut that directs your browser to specific page
boot – the act of turning on a computer
broadband – high-speed data transmission that can carry a large amount of data
browser – used to access web pages
buffer – data stored in a short amount of time, usually in RAM
bug – error in software
cache – stores recently used information to be quickly accessed later
caps lock – used to make all characters after pressed capitalized
captcha – used to verify if someone is human
client – service made available by server
clip art – collection of pictures or images
clip board – storage of copied data
cloud – centralized data storage

command – a way to perform an action
compile – changing code into a workable program
compress – reduce size of one or more files
